98th annual Fairfax Alumni Banquet-

The 98th annual Fairfax Alumni Banquet was held on Friday, May 5, 2017, in the high school gymnasium with 306 in attendance for the Star Wars themed evening. Ten seniors, Michael Baker, Goldie Barnes, Audrae Bates, Alyssa Beck, Alex Carroll, Brody Cooper, Alyssa Garrison, Caitlyn O’Riley, Mason Straub, and Dakota Allen, along with Rhonda Kay Baker ’16 and Gary Johnson ’75, were presented for initiation into the Alumni Association this year.
The welcome was given by J.R. Cooper ’67 and Donovan Cooper ’88 with response by Brody Cooper representing the class of 2017. Invocation was given by Mike Hawkins ’73. A delicious buffet by Nisha Valley Café, Shenadoah, was enjoyed. Doyne Swan ’41 and Maxine Hall Murray ’43 were introduced as the oldest Alumni in attendance. A note was read from 1937 graduate Mary Lou Martin Prettyman now living in California and unable to attend the banquet honoring her 80 year class. Three members of the 70 year class of ’47 were presented a rose by a family member: Mary Slemons Graves, Margaret Bowness Graves and Carol Mae Wright Ball. The other honor classes of ’57, ’67, ’77, ’87, ’97 and ’07 were introduced by a member of their class. The seniors were introduced and Mason Straub was recognized as having 4 generations of alumni present on his mother’s side and 3 generations on his father’s. Brody Cooper and Dakota Allen also had 3 generations present.
The business meeting was called to order by President Kerry Wensel Baker. The 2017 Alumni scholarship was presented to Alyssa Garrison. Two benches made by Mason Straub using old pads from the school gymnasium were auctioned with Mason serving as Auctioneer. The auction raised $650.00 and two more benches will be raffled off at the Fairfax Fair in August. The money will go towards the purchase of a new sound system for the school. A donation of $1,100.07 was also collected to go toward the sound system. Other donations may be sent to Lisa Mitchell.
The Alumni also voted to donate $600 to the school for the scanning of the class composites so they can be downloaded onto the school’s webpage. This will give everyone easy access to all senior class pictures from past years.
The minutes and treasurer’s report were given and approved. The slate of officers for the upcoming year was presented by Ralph Ball: Alicia Clark White, president; Dru Oswald, vice-president; Krys Fisher Carlock, secretary; and Lisa Southard Mitchell, treasurer, the slate was accepted as presented. The business meeting was adjourned and the program and initiation of the seniors followed.
