Rock Port traveled to Graham, Missouri, to take on the South Holt / Nodaway Holt Spartans on Friday, October 6, 2017.
From the beginning the Jays didn’t look sharp. Both offensively and defensively they struggled to get things going. In the end, the Jays would score a total of 12 times and the Spartans would score five, making the final score 82-32.
After a recovered fumble, Rock Port marched the ball down the field when Quentin Carder got things started with a 24 yard run. The point after was no good, and the Jays had a 6-0 lead. That lead would be short-lived after the Jays turned the ball over in downs. The Spartans would move the ball to the Rock Port 25 yard line before quarterback Eric Ottman would score from 25 yards out to tie the game a 6-6.
Rock Port scored three more times with runs from Quentin Carder, Gavin Abbott, and a pass from Jase Hughes to Caden Linthicum. Each time the two point conversion failed which brought the score to 24-6.
The Spartans would put another six points on the board making the score 24-12.
Carder had a 64 yard run, Martin a 4 yard run, and Linthicum caught a pass from Hughes on a two point conversion which brought the half time score to 38-12.
The second half seemed to be fast and furious with the scoring. The Spartans covered the onside kick at the 40 yard line and four plays later Eric Ottman hit Hayden Morris for six. PAT was no good. This was followed by a pick six by Gavin Abbott and Martin’s two point conversion was good. SHNH followed with six and a two point conversion. This started a trend – Rock Port would put two more touchdowns on the board by Abbott and Linthicum and the Spartans would add another.
Brock Martin capped the night off with a 63 yard run to end the game 82-32.
Rock Port will face Mound City on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium. Mound City and Rock Port are both undefeated, and this will be the biggest test for the Jays this season. Be sure to get out and support them on Friday.
