Jim Pierson, Private Land Conservationist (Atchison, Holt & Nodaway Counties), USDA/NRCS office

The Missouri Dept. of Conservation (MDC) will host a Loess Hill Timber and Prairie Field Day on May 13, 2017, at the Rex Reynolds farm on the northwest edge of Forest City on Hwy. 111 starting at 10:00 a.m. The Loess Hills of Holt and Atchison Counties are a unique geographic landmark, and are home to Missouri’s only dry land prairies. MDC Foresters will provide advice and take participants on a walk through the timber on private land in the morning. Information on proper timber management including timber stand improvement, sales and how to obtain a forest stewardship plan, will be covered with plenty of time for questions. The afternoon section will focus on loess hill prairie restoration. A walking tour will cover work that has been accomplished on the land. Discussions on the benefits and problems associated with restoration will be covered. Other topics will be cost share opportunities for both timber and prairie. Lunch will be provided by MDC. For more information and to RSVP please contact Jim Pierson, Private Land Conservationist at 660-442-3173 ext. 114.
