When a convoy of eighteen huge army trucks and the accompanying group of some forty soldiers stopped overnight in Rock Port last Friday, one thing which caught everyone’s eye was the size of the tires on the ten wheels on each truck. It was a formidable array of equipage which was parked in the Hotel Opp block and on down Main Street. The huge tires (ten on each truck and two spares) caught the speculative fever of those who looked at them, with the result that a local tire dealer figured the approximate value of the rubber, according to civilian standards, at no less than $42,200. One of the men in the group stated that there was enough rubber in each of the truck tires to make six average sized automobile tires.
