The Fairfax R-3 Board of Education met on July 19, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in the school library and discussed the following items from the regular and executive meeting agendas:
Financial Report
Summary – We finished the year with $52,000 in the black. However, this is with a partial insurance payment still in our accounts of roughly $78,000. This overage minus the $52,000 puts us at a deficit of $26,000.00. This amount is within $2,000.00 of our budgeted deficit for the 17-18 School Year. This year’s expenditures include unbudgeted expenditures such as an additional para, a new bus, and paying for the installation of windows on the south side of the high school building.
Roof Update
Actually beginning cafeteria work on the 30th. The roofs on the Elementary, High School, Cafeteria and Gym are all being replaced through a storm damage claim. All roofs but the gym are scheduled to be completed prior to the start of school and the gym will most likely be in the summer of 2019.
Construction Update
Bids are due Friday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m. and will be opened at that time by HTK, the superintendent, and available board members. A Special Board Meeting for bid approval has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. August 6. While construction will be disruptive, our schedule is to reach substantial completion by the first week of December.
Transportation Update
While we have one business that is willing to take our out-of-service bus off of our hands, the District will be accepting offers for the purchase of Bus #95. The bus is being sold as-is and any interested parties may contact the Superintendent’s Office at (660) 686-1010.
Property Tax Outlook
According to the documents sent from the assessor, Fairfax R-3 will get an additional $241,000 in new revenue from our spring levy vote. The final numbers will be discussed and voted on during the tax levy open hearing on August 16 at 6:30 p.m.
Re-adoption of
Board Policies
The Board re-adopted Policies 0342 regarding Nepotism, Conflict of Interest, and Financial Disclosure and Policy 1110-Religious Expression as they currently appear in Board Policy. There was a brief explanation from the superintendent regarding these two policies and both policies can be found on the school district website.
Milk Bids
The board decided to renew the district’s milk contract with Anderson-Erickson. The district currently uses AE, is satisfied with their service, and AE submitted the lowest bid.
Personnel
The board approved Mr. Gerald Nelson as the 2018-2019 Jr. High and High School Math teacher and Academic Team Coach. Mr. Nelson has worked as a substitute teacher in northwest Missouri, as well as an electrical engineer for Hewlett Packard, and a web designer.
The board also approved the placement of Ms. Madison Hagey in the position of Assistant Jr. High Volleyball Coach. This fall Ms. Hagey will split her time between Jr. High Volleyball, High School Volleyball, and part-time Athletic Director.
The next regular meeting for the Fairfax R-3 Board of Education will be August 16, 2018, immediately following the tax rate hearing. A special meeting to approve contract bids will be held on August 6, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.
