(PRESS RELEASE, ATCHISON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT 5/31/2019)

On May 23, 2019, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports from Atchison County residents of a suspicious vehicle located near exit 99 as well as Highway 111. An extensive search of the area was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State High Patrol but the vehicle could not be located.

After further investigation and numerous conversations with York County, Nebraska and the FBI, late in the afternoon on May 24 the FBI informed the Sheriff’s Office the license plate on the suspicious vehicle reported on May 23rdwas stolen out of Nebraska. The FBI believed Dustin Bilbrey and Rebecca Humphrey were in possession of the stolen vehicle and they were both Potential Threats to Law Enforcement, armed and dangerous, and facing charges in other states. They were last believed to be in Eastern Nebraska or Western Iowa but now believed to be in Atchison County, Missouri.

Late in the afternoon on May 24thand as the Sheriff’s Office was in the process of contacting the residents in the area where the suspicious vehicle had been seen, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a land owner of a suspicious male on his property near exit 99. The Sheriff and Deputy arrived on scene as the male, along with a female subject, stole another vehicle and fled the scene. The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and local citizens pursued the vehicle onto a dirt road, through a pasture and into a planted corn field where the apprehension was made. Suspects Dustin Bilbrey and Rebecca Humphrey were apprehended by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Rock Port Police Department, the Tarkio Police Department, the FBI and multiple citizens.

Suspects Dustin Bilbrey, 36 y/o w/m from Salina, KS and Rebecca Humphrey, 33 y/o w/f from Pratt, KS are being held in the Atchison County Jail on multiple charges including Tampering with a motor vehicle and 2ndDegree Burglary. They are also being held on felony charges out of Kansas for Armed Robbery.

We would like to add, the apprehension of these suspects and the safety of all law enforcement involved was made possible do to the vigilance of Atchison County citizens immediately calling and reporting suspicious activity, helping the Sheriff’s Office get the right information so we were able to respond accordingly to the situation.
