It’s not every day you find a weather balloon in a field in Atchison County, but last week, the Laurs (Dave, Sue, and Emmy) did. The weather instrument, Radiosonde No. LMS6, was released by the National Weather Service Station at Valley, Nebraska, on March 24, 2011, and was discovered Thursday, June 27, 2019, on the Laurs’ farm on R Ave. outside of Westboro, Missouri. The instrument came with instructions and a bag on how to send it back. Dave Laur said that this field is checked regularly so it somehow just now showed up on their property. Whether it’s been sailing the blowing winds since 2011 or was carried into the field by a critter is not yet known, but hopefully the Laurs will get a response back when the instrument finally makes it home. Dave and Sue’s granddaughter, Emmy Laur, is pictured with the weather instrument.
