February 22, 1946
• A Chevy truck belonging to the Pearce Produce and Hatchery was wrecked near the Burlington crossing on Highway 275, north of Fairfax, Monday afternoon. The front wheels came off the truck and it turned upside down in the ditch along the highway. The truck was loaded with about 100 sacks of feed which were considerably damaged by water in the ditch. The driver escaped with only slight injuries.
• The acute world sugar shortage is expected to ease only slightly in the coming year. Cuba and Puerto Rico will contribute a little more than we got from them last year, but the Philippines and Java, once a source of our sugar supplies, will be slow in getting back into production.
• Tom Simmons has purchased 45 acres from Pete Kincannon. The land joins the Simmons farm on the west. Mr. Simmons has sold 80 acres of land located just east of the county line in Nodaway County to Bryan O. Childers.

• Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Hawkins will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church March 7. Mr. Hawkins and Miss Beulah VanGundy were married March 1, 1921, at the Presbyterian manse by Rev. John R. Fraser. Natives of Fairfax community, they have spent their entire married life in the same area.
• A dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oral Davis marked the occasion of 55th wedding anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Davis February 16. In the evening, the couple enjoyed supper with Mr. and Mrs. David Showater of Craig, perpetuating a custom of 55 years which started when the two honeymooning couples met on the train enroute to St. Joseph on their wedding day.
• The 16th annual Atchison County Government Day was held at the courthouse in Rock Port on February 18. The Fairfax R-3 Citizenship Class participated in the event.
• Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Morris of Fortescue have purchased the 807 acre farm of Mrs. Ray Clark, located three miles north of the old Dotham store in Atchison County. Mrs. Clark will continue to make her home on the farm for the time being, but Morris will take over operation of the land.

• Fairfax pre-algebra students placed 1st in the Northwest District Mathcounts competition and will advance to state. They are Tasha Avrett, Tiffany Taylor, Jack Fries, and Alex Hunter.
• Over the Backfence by Nancy Gaines: “Valentine’s Day was really neat here. I got flowers, candy, gifts and lots of cards. The flower shop delivered. Then they were back for a delivery to Lois, only they took it back. What kind of deal is this? We all had a laugh over it, remembering the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.”
• The gang over at K.G. Buds were really busy last Wednesday to carry out Valentine’s Day. Over 150 balloons were filled with helium to board the balloon wagon to the Fairfax school, many with bags of candy or teddy bears tied to the end of the string.
