DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE MONTH CHANGE: \nThe first Fairfax Farmer’s Market of 2026 will be held in May\, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Main Street. Vendors are welcome to stay until 1:00 p.m. to catch the lunch crowd. There is no fee to set up a stand\, but you must supply your own canopy\, tables\, and chairs. There will be weekly regular vendors as well as other featured sellers who will make an occasional appearance. \nThe Atchison County Library will also have two carts overflowing with books (25¢ each)\, audiobooks (25¢ each)\, movies ($1)\, and magazines  (free) available from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Whether you’re a reader who loves romance\, western\, nonfiction\, mystery\, or more – the library has you covered! There will be table books and antique books for decorating or crafts\, magazines with recipes or great pictures for projects. \nStay tuned for more information once we get closer to May.

DESCRIPTION:The farmers market operated by Richard and Helen Burkey in Tarkio will open for the 2026 season starting in April. The market is located at the Burkey residence\, right before the curve as you head south out of Tarkio at 20564 U.S. Hwy. 59 (use the north driveway). They will be open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. \nThe Burkeys have purchased a refrigerated truck\, which will keep the food that needs to stay cool fresh. As the fruit and vegetable seasons progress\, the Burkeys will be selling watermelons\, cantaloupes\, cabbages\, tomatoes\, and peaches. They also have average to large sized\, farm fresh eggs gathered daily. Besides eggs\, fruits and vegetables\, the Burkeys also plan to have fishing equipment and antiques for sale on the property. DESCRIPTION:Free summer meals have been available for all kids and teens through the Kids’ Summer Meals program. The program will be ending this week due to the new school year starting. \nThe Tarkio Nutrition Center is located at 412 Main Street in Tarkio. Breakfast for kids will be served from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Lunch for kids will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. \nFamilies in Fairfax can pre-order lunch\, but must call 660-736-5725 by 9:00 a.m. that day. Meals are reserved on a first‑come\, first‑served basis\, so be sure to call in advance. Meals can be picked up from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Fairfax branch of the Atchison County Library\, located at 118 E. DESCRIPTION:The Brownville Fine Arts Association will present “George Custer and the Great Plains: History\, Landscape\, and Legacy” as part of the 2026 season Speakers Series this Saturday\, July 18\, at the Schoolhouse Art Gallery in Brownville\, Nebraska. The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. \nIn his nine years on the Great Plains\, George Armstrong Custer transformed from Civil War hero to a frontier figure\, fully immersed in the vast\, wild heart of the American West. Custer was sent by the U.S. Army to open the “Great American Desert” for the advent of the transcontinental railroad\, but during his time here he explored and hunted the sweeping prairies\, climbed the rugged peaks of its mountains\, collected and shared its flora\, fauna and fossils\, and encountered the diverse Native cultures of the Plains. \nHumanities Nebraska says\, “Jeff Barnes has followed Custer’s nine-year path across the Plains\, from 1867 in Nebraska to 1876 in Montana. Using Custer’s trail as his route\, Barnes has collected the imagery and the stories to show how the energy\, danger\, and beauty of the Plains may have influenced Custer and helped shape his complex legacy – and why his story still begs reflection a century and a half after his death at the Little Bighorn. \n“Barnes is a former newspaper reporter and editor\, trustee with the Nebraska State Historical Society\, past chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission\, and former marketing director for the Durham Museum. He is the author of “Forts of the Northern Plains\,” “The Great Plains Guide to Custer\,” and “The Great Plains Guide to Buffalo Bill.” \nThe program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Humanities Nebraska and Brownville Fine Arts Association. The Schoolhouse Art Gallery is located at 427 Main Street in Brownville.
