DESCRIPTION:The Atchison County Library will hold the first-ever Books & Breezes Kite Festival\, a  family-friendly event that brings the community together to celebrate reading\, creativity\, and the wonder of flight. The festival will take place on Saturday\, August 9\, 2025\, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Gould Peterson Municipal Airport in Tarkio\, Missouri\, and is open to the public. \nAdmission is free. However\, a suggested $5.00 per person or free will donation for admission will be graciously accepted. Senior citizens and children under the age of 3 are free. This special event supports the future of the Atchison County Library\, including the new facility in Rock Port. \nThe Great American Kite Company who is putting on the show\, is a family run business from Chillicothe\, Missouri. They own one of the nation’s largest collections of giant kites. Owner Sean Beaver described the company as specializing in producing\, planning and managing giant kite displays and festivals with over 15 years of “once-in-a-lifetime” kite shows. \nAttendees will experience perfect views featuring colorful kites soaring through the sky. Community members are encouraged to bring their own kites or use one provided at the festival to participate in public kite flying. \nChildren will have the opportunity to take part in a free kite-making workshop where they can design and decorate their own paper kites. A retail kite store will also be available on-site\, offering a variety of kites for purchase so families can continue the fun at home. \nCommunity partnerships are also a huge part of this event. \n“This event would not be possible without the support of our hosts at the Tarkio airport and our amazing sponsors. We are so grateful that our community is all hands on deck for this event\,” said Jennifer Roup\, Atchison County Library Director. The meeting is specifically for people caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or any type of dementia\, or for anyone who wants to learn more about the resources available to caregivers in this area. \nCaring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or any type of dementia is a challenge that can become an overwhelming burden for the caregiver: physically\, financially\, and psychologically. Most people are not prepared for many of the issues they encounter as a caregiver. There is so much that caregivers need to understand to be able to help their loved one. Many times\, caregivers are focused on simply making it through a day and do not know where to turn for help\, or even what type of help to seek. \nThe purpose of this new support group is to help connect caregivers with resources\, while also offering a supportive and safe environment for sharing and discussion. \nThere are over seven million persons living with Alzheimer’s in the United States. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are as many as 10\,000 persons living with the disease in Northwest Missouri. The Alzheimer’s Association is the largest funder of Alzheimer’s research in the United States.

The three schools will be holding registration and open houses this week and next for new and returning students. \nRegistration for elementary\, junior high\, and high school students attending Fairfax R-3 will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday\, August 6\, in the school library. The back-to-school night is scheduled for Tuesday\, August 19\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The first day of school will be Wednesday\, August 20\, with classes starting at 7:55 a.m. and dismissing that day at 12:08 p.m. Both breakfast and lunch will be served. \nRegistration for all (new and returning) Tarkio Elementary students is Wednesday\, August 6\, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the elementary school. Registration for returning Tarkio Junior High and High School students will be held Thursday\, August 7\, at the high school. The breakdown of registration times that day are: seniors\, 8:00-9:00 a.m.; juniors\, 9:00-9:30 a.m.; sophomores\, 9:30-10:00 a.m.; freshmen\, 10:00-10:30 a.m.; 8th graders\, 10:30-11:00 a.m.; 7th graders\, 11:00-11:30 a.m.; and 6th graders\, 11:30 a.m.-12:00 noon. Registration for new junior high and high school students at Tarkio R-I will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Friday\, August 8\, at the high school. DESCRIPTION:University of Missouri Extension specialists will offer a full day of discussion and hands-on training on using drones in Missouri agriculture at the MU Graves-Chapple Extension and Education Center at Fairfax August 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \nMU Extension specialists will discuss the kinds of drones being used in agricultural settings including an overview of the capabilities of small drones and large utility drones commonly used for spraying or spreading materials. They also will give examples of how these technologies can be used by entrepreneurs in their business models. \nThe morning will be spent in classroom lecture and discussion\, with a catered lunch being provided at noon. The afternoon will be devoted to field exercises. Participants will receive dedicated hands-on training on manual flight maneuvers of small and large drones\, as well as autonomous mission planning and task implementation for drone imaging\, spraying and spreading. \n“By the end of the day\, attendees should have a firm grasp on the many ways drones can be used in Missouri agriculture\, the licensing and certifications required to pilot these technologies\, basics of aircraft performance\, weather and safety considerations\, imaging and mapping tools\, calibrating sprayer and spreader functions on utility drones\, and manual flight controls for these aircraft\,” says MU Extension agronomist Rusty Lee. \nRegistration fee includes trainings\, materials packet\, and catered lunch. DESCRIPTION:The Atchison County Fair will take place July 14-19\, in Rock Port. The 4-H Achievement Day will kick things off on Monday\, July 14\, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Velma Houts Fair Building at 201 E. U.S. Highway 136. Home Arts exhibits will be on display starting Tuesday evening\, July 15. \nThe livestock shows will be held in the arena behind the Velma Houts building. The rabbit show will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Wednesday\, July 16. Events to take place on Thursday\, July 17\, include the swine show at 9:00 a.m. and the sheep and goat show at 6:30 p.m. The cattle show will be held Friday\, July 18\, at 9:30 a.m. and the auction will take place that evening at 6:00 p.m. The food stand will be open throughout the week for concessions. \nSaturday’s festivities will include a parade on Main Street in Rock Port. Registration will take place at the Rock Port School from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. and the parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. A greased pig contest will be held at the fairgrounds at 11:00 a.m. \nCome out to the fair and support our local youth\, exhibitors\, and organizers!

SUMMARY:East Atchison Cross Country Team hosting 5K
DESCRIPTION:The East Atchison Wolves Cross Country Team will be hosting its third annual Run With the Wolves 5K Saturday\, July 12\, 2025\, in Tarkio\, Missouri. The event starts in the parking lot of the Tarkio Activity Center (TAC) at 8 a.m.\, moves onto the streets of Tarkio down and around Niedermeyer Park\, back up to the TAC\, around Tarkio High School and finishes in the TAC parking lot where it started. You can find the map at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GVcOV2zcGFy06I9zAgdggyuQexmp9VLyX66qzcXobYE/edit?usp=sharing. \nA few maps will be printed and available at the event. The roads will be lightly marked and there will be a lead vehicle or runner as well as volunteer field marshals to help direct you. Water bottles will be provided at the start/finish line\, and there will be a water station around the 1-1.25 mile mark at Niedermeyer Park. \nThe team is looking to promote both a fun and competitive time and would like to see the community use this event as an opportunity to socialize and stay healthy. Members of the cross country team will serve as pacers to help runners who want to reach a time goal. \nThe entry fee is $20. All runners who sign up before July 3 will receive a complementary t-shirt. All runners who sign up before July 11 will be timed\, and be eligible for medaling. You can also sign up the day of the event\, but there will be a limited supply of shirts. Medals will be awarded based on age groups. DESCRIPTION:Make plans to attend the Wingnuts Flying Circus Air Show at the Gould Peterson Municipal Airport in Tarkio Saturday\, July 12\, 2025. Admission is $10 for ages six and up. People flying planes in and attendees five and under are free. The fly-in breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. (food will be served through lunch). A congressional aviation town hall meeting will be held at the EAA hangar at 10:00 a.m. The air show will begin at 12:00 noon. \nAir show sights will include Matt Younkin with his Twin Beech\, a B-2 Flyover\, a WWII training demonstration\, the Joint Special Forces Jump Team\, WWII Warbird parade\, Dakota Territory Museum demonstration\, T-6 display\, Jerry “Jive” Kirby with a T-28\, and Doug Rozendaal with his Mister Mulligan. There will be many planes on hand to see including a B-25\, P-51s\, T-6s\, a PT-26\, a PT-19\, a BT-13\, a Corsair\, a P-40\, a PT-22\, a C-47\, a Grumman Avenger\, and other warbirds and vintage aircraft. \nFor more information\, call the EAA Chapter 1405 members at 816-244-6927 or 816-262-8500 or visit www.wingnutsflyingcircus.com. The airport is located on Route O. Travel east of Tarkio on Hwy. 136 to the Route O intersection (the first intersection you come to just outside of town) and turn north. You will see the airport from the road and volunteers will direct you where to park. Route O at the Hwy. 136 intersection is usually closed around 11:30 a.m. and will remain closed for the duration of the air show demonstrations\, so be sure to get there early. Bring your lawn chairs and a hat and enjoy the show!
