SUMMARY:MDC Free Fishing Days June 7 and 8
DESCRIPTION:Want some free fun that gets family and friends outside in nature? Get hooked on fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Free Fishing Days June 7 and 8. During Free Fishing Days\, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit\, trout permit\, or trout park daily tag. \nFree Fishing Days is an annual MDC event that takes place statewide during the Saturday and Sunday following the first Monday in June. Aside from not needing permits\, other fishing regulations remain in effect\, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county\, city\, or private fishing areas. Trespass laws remain in effect on private property. \nConservation makes Missouri a great place to fish\, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample Missouri’s abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water\, and most of it provides great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri\, with more than 20 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers. \nFor information on Missouri fishing regulations\, fish identification\, and more\, get a copy of MDC’s 2025 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations\, available where permits are sold\, or online at mdc.mo.gov/about-us/about-regulations/summary-missouri-fishing-regulations. \nMDC’s Discover Nature – Fishing Program provides a series of free lessons throughout the state. All fishing gear is provided. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/discover-nature-fishing. \nMDC works with numerous libraries and other locations around the state to loan fishing gear for free. Loaner gear includes fishing poles and simple tackle box with hooks\, sinkers\, and bobbers. Worms\, minnows\, or other bait are not provided. Find MDC Rod and Reel Loaner Program locations at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/get-started-fishing/rod-reel-loaner-locations. \nMDC’s free MO Fishing app can help anglers find the best places to fish in Missouri\, access regulation information\, identify fish by species\, and more. Anglers can also buy\, store\, and show fishing permits right on their mobile devices. MO Fishing is available for download through Google Play for Android devices or the App Store for Apple devices. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/contact-engage/mobile-apps/mo-fishing.

SUMMARY:Memorial service 2025 at Walkup Grove Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:A memorial service of worship will be held Sunday\, May 25\, at 11:00 a.m. at Walkup Grove Cemetery in Atchison County. The worship is sponsored by St. Oswald’s-in-the-Field Episcopal Church\, with Fr. Sidney Breese presiding at this special service. Those in attendance should bring a lawn chair and enjoy the beauty and peace of a historical country cemetery. \nFollowing the worship service\, there will be a potluck dinner at St. Oswald’s. Please bring a dish for the meal. In case of inclement weather\, worship will be held at St. Oswald’s (30996 X Avenue\, Skidmore\, Missouri). \nWalkup Grove\, about 150 years old\, still retains its natural beauty. It is nestled among a grove of hickory nut trees on top of a hill which falls to the west on a sharp decline to the Little Tarkio River. Tranquility and peacefulness reign here. Travelers over a hundred years ago stopped at Mr. Walkup’s farm and asked for a place on his land to bury their child. This neighborhood cemetery is an ecumenical one with all denominations of religion buried there. At one time\, the neighborhood supported Presbyterian\, Methodist\, Baptist and Episcopal churches. St. Oswald’s is now the only remaining church in this area. \nFrom Mound City\, take Route N north of Mound City approximately 14 miles\, which is one mile south of Hwy. 46. Turn east on 280th. Continue on that gravel road one mile to Walkup Grove Cemetery. \nFrom Maryville\, take Highway 46 for 19 miles west. Turn south on EE for 2 miles. Turn west on 290th Avenue for one mile. Then turn north on W Avenue for one mile. The cemetery will be on your left. \nFrom Fairfax\, take Highway 46 east to State Route N. Turn south and go one mile\, then turn east on 280th Avenue. Continue on that gravel road one mile to Walkup Grove Cemetery.

SUMMARY:Community-wide revival of Tarkiesta May 25
DESCRIPTION:A community-wide annual celebration from the 1940s is being reborn this spring in Tarkio. The Tarkiesta celebration will be held on Sunday\, May 25. The theme will be centered on celebrating the 200th birthday of David Rankin. \nIn the late 19th century\, Rankin became the largest farmer in the United States and a key developer of Tarkio. After buying his first land in Atchison County in the 1870s\, he moved to Tarkio in 1885 from Illinois at the age of 60. His two sons preceded him to Northwest Missouri. Rankin created a farming empire and pioneered the practice of farming with multi-row cultivators with his army of mules\, as well as crop rotation\, and profit-sharing with his managers. In addition to his farming enterprises\, he also was a co-founder of Tarkio College and established Midland Manufacturing Company\, which made cultivators and other farm equipment. Other local enterprises he began included bringing the railroad to Tarkio\, Fairfax and Westboro\, which was key for development of the town of Tarkio\, as well as establishing the First National Bank\, local telephone and electric utility service\, among several other ventures. \nTarkiesta was first celebrated in August of 1941\, suspended during WWII\, then resumed in 1946. The festival was last held about 75 years ago. \nThis year’s celebration will begin with “Cowboy Church” at 8:30 a.m. in the Rotary Theatre at The Curnutt Center at Tarkio Tech. At 10:30 a.m.\, a community-wide worship service will take place at the Tarkio Presbyterian Church. Reverend Mark Dalbey will be the speaker. Food trucks will be set up at 1st and Main streets for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A historic business “self-tour” will take place during that time on Main Street from 1st to 4th streets. A David Rankin program will be held at 1st and Main from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and a parade will follow at 2:30 p.m. The parade will go up Main Street\, starting at 1st and ending at the Tarkio Tech campus. Campus and museum tours (the TCAA Museum at Rankin Hall and the David Rankin Museum at The Curnutt Center) will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Also during that time\, mules will be on display on campus. A Rankin Homes riding tour will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. beginning on the west side of the Dr. Jack Schmidt Welding Center on campus. At 5:30 p.m.\, a wreath ceremony will be held at Tarkio Home Cemetery and Center Grove Cemetery outside of Westboro.
