DESCRIPTION:The 2026 T.M. Wharton Blue Jay Classic will be held Sunday\, September 6\, at the Rock Port Golf & Country Club. The Blue Jay Classic Golf tournament began in 2010. In 2014\, the tournament was renamed to remember a beloved Blue Jay\, T.M. Wharton. \nThe four-person scramble is a fundraiser for the Rock Port High School Booster Club. Tee-off for the four person scramble is at 10:00 a.m. At least one Rock Port alum\, current student\, or teacher must be on the team. The entry fee is $60 per person (includes mulligans). You must provide your own cart. SUMMARY:The Brownville Concert Series to present Robert Walters: Oboe
DESCRIPTION:The Brownville Concert Series will welcome acclaimed American oboist\, Robert Walters\, in concert Sunday\, September 13. Walters is a native of Los Angeles\, raised in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, and is a professor of oboe and English horn at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The show will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sponsors are John and Mary Lauber. \nRobert Walters joined The Cleveland Orchestra as solo English horn in 2004. Mr. Walters made his concerto debut with the Orchestra in 2006 performing Ned Rorem’s English Horn Concerto\, and has subsequently played Peteris Vasks’s English Horn Concerto and\, on the oboe d’amore\, Bach’s Concerto in A Major\, BWV1055. In November 2015\, he premiered Bernard Rands’s Concerto for English Horn with The Cleveland Orchestra\, which was commissioned for Mr. Walters as part of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music’s 150th anniversary celebrations. \nMr. Walters has also appeared as guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, Beijing Radio Symphony\, China Film Philharmonic\, Qingdao Symphony Orchestra\, New York Chamber Soloists\, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra\, Phoenix Symphony\, Redlands Symphony\, and most recently at Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo\, California. Prior to coming to Cleveland\, Mr. Walters was the solo English horn player of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (2000-2004) and with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1997-2000). As an oboist\, Mr. Walters performed and recorded frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra and was active as a freelance musician in New York. Mr. Walters was also a frequent performer with James Laevine and the Met Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. \nRobert Walters spent five summers with the Marlboro Music Festival and has toured as a member of Musicians from Marlboro. In addition to teaching at the Music Academy of the West\, Mr. Walters has appeared at the festivals of Banff\, Bard\, St. Bart’s\, Caramoor\, Grand Teton\, and Spoleto. His annual series of masterclasses at Hidden Valley Music Seminar in Carmel\, California\, attracts top players from across the country. Mr. Walters has served as an artist faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School and\, for the past eleven years\, at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. Mr. Walters is a frequent coach with the New World Symphony and at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. \nA fourth-generation college music professor\, Robert Walters has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music since 2006\, and was appointed professor of oboe and English horn in 2010. DESCRIPTION:The 42nd annual Old Fashioned Saturday Night will be held September 19\, 2026. The event is held on Main Street in Rock Port. The festivities will start at 5:00 p.m. with “The Star Spangled Banner” near the Atchison County Memorial Building. \nDuncan’s Carriage Rides and the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull will be in Rock Port again this year. Registration for the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the pull will start at 6:30 p.m. The tractor pull will again be at the intersection of Opp and Main. \nLocal businesses\, clubs and organizations are invited to set up booths\, games\, and activities of all kinds. If you would like to have a booth this year please let Betty Stoner know. Registration forms will be available after August 3. You can contact Betty at 660-787-0531 or text her at the same number and she will get you a form. The registration form can also be found on the Rock Port Chamber Facebook page. The fee for a booth is $10.00 and can be paid the night of the event. If you want the same spot as you have had before please let Betty know so she can reserve it for you. The spots will be done on a first come\, first served basis. All registration forms need to be turned in by September 8 in order to get the map made up and turned in to the Atchison County Mail. \n“Everyone get your thinking caps on as to what you want to do\,” Betty said. “Hopefully we will have a successful night.” \nIf you would like to see something different this year let Betty know and maybe (with your help) they can get something new this year such as more games and entertainment for the kids.
