SUMMARY:“Celebrate America” at the 60th annual Fairfax Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 60th annual Fairfax Fair will be held Friday through Sunday\, August 21-23\, 2026\, in the Fairfax City Park. The annual event is sponsored by the Fairfax Optimist Club. This year’s theme is “Celebrate America.” \nBooths will be open in the park Friday evening and all day Saturday with games\, food\, merchandise and homemade wares\, giveaways and raffles. \nThe welcome and opening ceremonies will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friday\, August 21\, near the park stage with the raising of the flag and singing of the national anthem. The baby/youth show will be held at 6:30 p.m. The Fairfax National Honor Society and its sponsor\, Mrs. Shelley Eaton\, are hosting the show. Registration forms can be picked up at Keeling’s Dairy Diner and KG Buds Designs By Jay and then turned in at the fair. Registration for the show will begin at 5:30 p.m. Children and parents will begin lining up no later than 6:15 p.m. All participants must have an adult with them during the show and on the stage. Any child from birth to six years old is welcome to participate in the baby/youth show. All Little Mr. and Miss Fairfax contestants must be five or six years old and must live in the Fairfax R-3 School District. The show will start with the introduction of the Little Mr. and Miss Fairfax contestants and then will move into the baby/youth show. The show will end with the coronation of Miss Fairfax. A dance on the slab will follow. \nThe Harry Combs Memorial Tractor show will be held Saturday\, August 22\, at the football field around 10:30 a.m. Enter your tractor in the show and then drive it in the parade. Parade line-up will begin at the ag building at 9:30 a.m. The parade will start at 11:00 a.m. and will travel down Main Street. Booths will open after the parade. \nEvents on the park stage begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening. The Southeast Nebraska Community Band\, directed by Ann Belva\, will play. The East Atchison cheerleaders performances\, Meet the East Atchison Wolves\, performance by comedian Cliff McNair\, and a performance by singer Chris Jones. Giveaways will also be announced. Another dance on the slab will end the festivities that night\, with music provided by the Curtis Wayne Stroud Band. \nThe Fairfax Ministerial Alliance will host Worship-In-The-Park Sunday\, August 23\, at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to take part. Bring your lawn chairs. \nThe Fairfax After Prom Dinner will be held Sunday\, August 23\, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Fairfax Community Room inside the fire station. Carry-outs will be available. Proceeds from the free-will donation meals will go towards Fairfax After Prom. Attendees can learn about upgrades at the center\, including a new plot combine\, truck\, trailer and mower\, as well as the use of PlanetScope remote-sensing technology. \nThese additions enhance the center’s capacity to collect data\, improve research efficiency and support demonstration projects that provide practical\, research-based solutions for agricultural producers\, Crawford said. \n“Field days are a crucial part of the land-grant mission\, providing producers\, agribusinesses and residents with research based\, unbiased information\,” he said. “This information can influence and assist them with maintaining or increasing their bottom line. This two-month journey was inspired by the Whooping Crane migration path to better understand the birds’ habitat preferences and to preserve the species for generations to come. \nAmong Forsberg’s awards and honors for his work are: Highly Commended\, BBC International Wildlife Photographer of the Year (2003); Great Plains\, Gold Medal\, Best Regional Non-Fiction\, Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs\, 2010); Nebraska Master Naturalist (2016); and Into Whooperland\, Silver Medal\, Nature Category\, National Outdoor Book Award (2025). \nForsberg’s work is guided by a keen sense of responsibility toward the environment. He said\, “I feel we are blessed to be stewards of this planet\, but in many cases\, we have forgotten that with this privilege comes responsibility. Photography can be a powerful witness to our shortcomings\, but also to show that beauty and hope still exist in the natural world.”

SUMMARY:The Brownville Concert Series to present Robert Walters: Oboe
DESCRIPTION:The Brownville Concert Series will welcome acclaimed American oboist\, Robert Walters\, in concert Sunday\, September 13. Walters is a native of Los Angeles\, raised in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, and is a professor of oboe and English horn at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The show will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sponsors are John and Mary Lauber. \nRobert Walters joined The Cleveland Orchestra as solo English horn in 2004. Mr. Walters made his concerto debut with the Orchestra in 2006 performing Ned Rorem’s English Horn Concerto\, and has subsequently played Peteris Vasks’s English Horn Concerto and\, on the oboe d’amore\, Bach’s Concerto in A Major\, BWV1055. In November 2015\, he premiered Bernard Rands’s Concerto for English Horn with The Cleveland Orchestra\, which was commissioned for Mr. Walters as part of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music’s 150th anniversary celebrations. \nMr. Walters has also appeared as guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, Beijing Radio Symphony\, China Film Philharmonic\, Qingdao Symphony Orchestra\, New York Chamber Soloists\, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra\, Phoenix Symphony\, Redlands Symphony\, and most recently at Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo\, California. Prior to coming to Cleveland\, Mr. Walters was the solo English horn player of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (2000-2004) and with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1997-2000). As an oboist\, Mr. Walters performed and recorded frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra and was active as a freelance musician in New York. Mr. Walters was also a frequent performer with James Laevine and the Met Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. \nRobert Walters spent five summers with the Marlboro Music Festival and has toured as a member of Musicians from Marlboro. In addition to teaching at the Music Academy of the West\, Mr. Walters has appeared at the festivals of Banff\, Bard\, St. Bart’s\, Caramoor\, Grand Teton\, and Spoleto. His annual series of masterclasses at Hidden Valley Music Seminar in Carmel\, California\, attracts top players from across the country. Mr. Walters has served as an artist faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School and\, for the past eleven years\, at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. Mr. Walters is a frequent coach with the New World Symphony and at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. \nA fourth-generation college music professor\, Robert Walters has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music since 2006\, and was appointed professor of oboe and English horn in 2010. DESCRIPTION:The 42nd annual Old Fashioned Saturday Night will be held September 19\, 2026. The event is held on Main Street in Rock Port. The festivities will start at 5:00 p.m. with “The Star Spangled Banner” near the Atchison County Memorial Building. \nDuncan’s Carriage Rides and the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull will be in Rock Port again this year. Registration for the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the pull will start at 6:30 p.m. The tractor pull will again be at the intersection of Opp and Main. \nLocal businesses\, clubs and organizations are invited to set up booths\, games\, and activities of all kinds. If you would like to have a booth this year please let Betty Stoner know. Registration forms will be available after August 3. You can contact Betty at 660-787-0531 or text her at the same number and she will get you a form. The registration form can also be found on the Rock Port Chamber Facebook page. The fee for a booth is $10.00 and can be paid the night of the event. If you want the same spot as you have had before please let Betty know so she can reserve it for you.
