Sheriff’s Office to host scam alert symposium

August 9 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Criminals are always looking for ways to scam people out of their money. According to the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, local citizens have paid approximately $600,000 to scams in the past two months. The sheriff’s office is working with Community Services, area churches, and Jayne Scott, Atchison County Public Administrator, to prevent this from happening again.

The sheriff’s office will host a symposium on scams Tuesday, August 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Fairfax Baptist Church. The church is located at 604 Angell Street, Fairfax.

Atchison County Deputy Rick Sons and others will be talking about ways to keep yourself and family members safe and how not to become victims of scams.

Discussions will include:

• What scams are happening in Atchison County?

• Who can help me know what is a scam or not?

• If I think I have been scammed who can help me?

• What are good sources in the county that I can donate to that are not scams?

Scams that sound help-ful and legitimate (but are not) are saturating our communities. This class will help citizens stay pro-active, knowledgeable, and safe from scams.
