August
2006
• Lillian Thiesfeld was named Community Hospital-Fairfax Auxilian of the Year.
• Trent Powell and Curtis Wheeler, both of Tarkio, traveled to Australia to compete in a “Down Under” track event.
• The Avalanche and Forum newspapers are now online at a new web address.
• At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2006, the U.S. Bank in Tarkio was robbed. The suspect entered the bank and stood patiently while a teller finished doing business with another customer. He then went up to the same teller’s window and handed over a note. The teller followed the note’s instructions and gave the robber the money.
• Advanced Pork Systems east of Fairfax held an open house at its new facility on August 28. The Atchison County operation is managed by Doug Garrison.
• Mallory Heits, a junior at Tarkio High School, and Mareike Angermann of Germany stayed with each other, both in Germany and Missouri, for three-week periods this summer thanks to an exchange program sponsored by the Tarkio Rotary Club.
• The 10th annual Friendship Day in Tarkio was held on Thursday, August 24. One thousand, five hundred roses and carnations were given out in bunches of four for the community to deliver and “Make Someone Smile.”
1991
• At the Atchison County Fair – Corey Lesher of Westboro exhibited the Grand Champion Market Hog and Pen of 5 Market Hogs. Jennifer Rolf, Hamburg, exhibited the Grand Champion Pen of 3 Market Hogs. Shane Bredensteiner of Westboro exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer. The top three places for Market Beef Rate of Gain went to Brian Vette of Westboro, Brian Hall of Blanchard, and Blu Bredensteiner of Westboro.
• Many volunteers put up new playground equipment, park benches, picnic tables, barbeque grills, water fountain, and a flag pole at the North City Park in Tarkio.
• A new computer network system with 15 work stations and a file server has been installed at Tarkio R-I.
• KMZU Radio Station of Carrollton, Missouri, purchased KTRX Radio Station in Tarkio. The transaction will allow the station to expand from 3,000 watts to 6,000 watts and will remain at 93.5 FM.
1966
• “Thrillarama,” billed as the nation’s top thrill show with motorcycles, autos, clowns, and a variety of entertaining acts, will be brought to Tarkio by the Tarkio Fire Department to raise funds for a new fire truck.
• Tarkio College student Leroy Zaugra, and former Tarkio College student Lawrence Carr, will be ushers in the wedding of the President’s daughter, Luci Johnson and Pat Nugent. The young men are residents of Waukegan, IL, and are lifelong friends of Pat.
• About 865 persons cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary election in Atchison County.
• The Farmers and Valley Bank has installed a new time and temperature sign. A self-correcting timing device gives exact-to-the-minute time. The temperature reading is completely unaffected by wind, direct sunlight, or heat from buildings. Inside the 950 pound clock are 184 lamps, 220 silver contact points, two electric motors, 46 electric switches, and 1/2 mile copper wire for each unit.
