• This community had a touch of real winter this week, the mercury dropping to five or six below zero Tuesday morning, making it the coldest week of the winter so far.

• Dr. O.P. Templeton celebrated his 90th birthday anniversary Christmas day and his many friends showered him with birthday cards, over 100 being sent to wish him a happy birthday. He also received other nice gifts, among them three fine birthday cakes. The event was observed quietly at home with his son and daughter, Miss L. Blanche Templeton and Claude A. Templeton. He has been in good health this winter and spends most of every day at his drug store.

• The 120 acres of land east of Fairfax belonging to the estate of the late Henry Shiffermiller was sold at partition sale at the courthouse in Rock Port Tuesday and was purchased by Ray C. Whitford.

January 1, 1970

• Scott Hawkins and Mike Monk will go to Denver, Colorado, January 18 to participate in the National Livestock Exposition with a judging team from NWMSC, Maryville.

• The appointment of Miss Belinda Bolton, president of FHA, Fairfax High School, as United Cerebral Palsy’s 1970 campaign chairman for Fairfax, was announced by Senator Stuart Symington, who is serving his ninth term as State Honorary UCP Campaign Chairman. Seventy-five percent of the money raised locally will aid handicapped children in this area.

• Community Hospital will become a smoke-free institution as of January 1, 1995. A new policy was established with a commitment to the well-being of the patients, employees and general public by prohibiting smoking inside the building. A designated smoking area for the employees and patients has been arranged on the outside of the building.

• The 49’ers Hobby Club members and spouses met at The Klub in Mound City December 20 for their annual Christmas supper. This year of 1994 was the Hobby Club’s 45th anniversary and they have three charter members still in the club, Carol Ball, Margaret Osburn and Emma Jones.
