November 29, 1946
• An attempt to start a balky tractor by using a blow-torch proved disastrous at the Earl Jones home on the Emma Jones farm north of Rock Port Monday. The tractor caught fire and in spite of the efforts of the owner, the blaze spread to the barn. The barn and its contents, including the tractor, went up in flames.
• Thirty Rock Port High School students participated in a ping pong tournament November 12. Donald Adams defeated Dean Curnutt in the finals by a close margin. Willard Fry and Donald Adams defeated Bill Bartholomew and E.R. Dalrymple in the doubles competition.
• The Rock Port faculty met for a duck dinner November 18. Coach Hinderliter provided the ducks and Mrs. Hunter and Miss Anderson were the chief cooks. Other teachers brought covered dishes.
• Miss Luella Burley, a Baptist missionary to India, spoke to the student body November 25. She showed many native dolls and costumes.
• Residents of Langdon have done a good job in recent days in eliminating the mudhole which had become a fixture on the plaza in front of the post office and other businesses. The business men and their farmer friends, in cooperation with Burlington, spread many carloads of cinders on the plaza making an excellent all-weather parking place.
November 25, 1971
• The student managers – Don Herron and David Phelps – for this year’s football team are a little worried. Rock Port recently purchased a water dispensing machine that takes the place of the manager’s tasks of carrying water jugs onto the field. Now all they have to do is tow the cart onto the field and that’s it! “Managers, have no fear. There will always be a place for you in dear old RPHS, because the coaches need someone to yell at and take their anger out on, and you’re usually closest.”
The Rock Port Barnwarming will be held November 24. King candidates are Joe Gayler, Alan Schumacher, and Orville Lee. Queen candidates are Paula Bramble, Debbie Perry, and Ronda Haer. FFA and FHA members will meet in the multi-purpose room for a “wild night of square dancing and refreshments.”
• At the beginning of this year, there were no less than 3,840 cars in operation in Atchison County, which is more cars than people here. Their receipts in the year for gas, oil, accessories, and repair total $2,416,000 as against the total five years ago of $2,295,000.
• Atchison County produced a bumper crop of babies in the last 10 years according to the Census Bureau. A total of 1,360 babies were born to local residents between 1960 to 1970.
November 21, 1996
• The first two days of the 1996 deer season did not see as many deer tagged at the 1995 season opener. Atchison County reported 539 kills, which is 92 short of 1995’s total. However, some monster bucks were harvested, such as a 30-point buck taken by Tom Gibson, Jr.
• One of your children could become tomorrow’s superstar. Thompson Photographics will be taking the free pictures for a special photo feature to be published in the newspaper soon.
