• As a result of a meeting of baseball enthusiasts of northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa, an amateur baseball league is to be organized with clubs from Hamburg, Iowa, and Rock Port, Tarkio, Craig, Burlington Junction, and Fairfax, Missouri. Part of the games to be played during the coming season will be night games, as most of the teams will have lighted fields available.
• Atchison County’s library has received enough books and processing materials to give limited service. Books may be checked out and kept for two weeks, except those in heavy demand. Until the book collection grows, each borrower may check out one book at a time.
• Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Weedin have purchased the residence property from Jimmie and H.O. Sly that was recently vacated by Mrs. Mabel Douglas.
• Thoms G. Simmons, S 1-c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Simmons of Fairfax, is stationed at New Orleans where he is with the Machines Records branch of the U.S. Navy. He has been in the service 11 months.
February 4, 1972
• Marcia Graves and Mark Sly were crowned queen and king of Fairfax R-3 Basketball Homecoming following the game Friday evening.
• Mr. and Mrs. Wm. M. Sly, Fairfax, recently observed their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner in Hamburg, Iowa. They were married February 11, 1922, at Fairfax with Rev. O.E. Lockhart officiating.
• Susy Slemons, senior student at Fairfax R-3 High School, has been accepted for membership in the United States Collegiate Wind Band, a select musical organization that will make a concert tour of seven of the world’s important cultural capitals in July and August. Suzy plays alto saxophone. The Collegiate Wind Band will travel for three weeks in England, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Luxemburg, and Russia.

• On January 3, Shane Hawkins was notified of publication of one of his poems. Shane’s English teacher, Colbey Morris, submitted the poem – titled “Sonnet 5” – to McGregor Hill Publishing of Tampa, Florida, which is a company that publishes high school students’ writings. Shane’s sonnet was one of 6,500 entries judged by the editorial board.
• Over The Back Fence By Nancy Gaines: “Went to the sixth grade class room at Fairfax Elementary last Thursday to a baby shower. The D.A.R.E. officer and his wife have a new baby. The class made a quilt and at the party, everyone wanted to hold the baby.”
• Atchison County girls named to the Fairfax Basketball All-Tournament Team were Jamie Johnson (Tarkio), Brook Osburn (Fairfax), and Megan Smith (Fairfax). Atchison County boys named to the All-Tournament Team were Brock Nuckolls (Tarkio), Heith Shaw (Tarkio), Danny Palmer (Rock Port), and Zac Smith (Fairfax).
