December 19, 1947
• Jimmy, small son of Mr. and Mrs. James Krusor, suffered severe lacerations to his thumb and first two fingers of his left hand last Saturday while operating his father’s electric saw.
• Miss Bessie Capper of Seattle, Washington, has sent a generous supply of holly to her Rock Port friends for distribution here. The holly contains a generous lot of berries.
• Miss Letah Doyle of Westboro, missionary at Merrut, India, has written about the welfare of all in that troubled country. “Last Sunday evening we buried the first Christian victim of the brutality of the Sikhs. She was a midwife in a village and had made friends with the Muslims. Horrible things had been done to her. Anyone with money is unsafe these days.”
• The addition to the Rock Port Mutual Telephone Company is going up, with Wm. McFarling laying the tile blocks. The addition, together with another at the rear of the present building, will allow all operations and storage to be under one roof.
• Herbert Townsend, who had some months ago sold his Main Street service station to Glen Miller, is going back into business. He is establishing a tire and battery shop in the Bentley Grain Co. building on North Main.
December 14, 1972
• Bill Collins of Hamburg, Iowa, suffered severe shoulder injuries when his clothing became caught in a grain auger on December 8. Collins, employed with Watson Elevator, had been unloading corn from a truck when his clothing got caught in the auger and pulled him into the machinery. It took 30 minutes for others to cut his clothing with pocket knives to release him.
• A car must hate parking meters. Junior Harbin’s vehicle was left in park and running in front of the auto parts store in Rock Port when it somehow backed away from the curb, made a wide circle, and struck the parking meter in front of Bank of Atchison County. Even though there were several other cars parked along that section of Main Street at the time, no other cars or property was damaged.
• A Sidney, Iowa, man was killed December 8 when his auto was struck by a Burlington freight train at a crossing six miles northwest of Watson. The vehicle was crossing over a levee when it became high centered on the west rail and the train could not stop in time.
December 11, 1997
• Major Scott Chamberlain, son of Greg and Betty Chamberlain, is currently serving in Operation Joint Guard. He was deployed in mid-November from his home in Heidelberg, Germany, and will be working in Hungary, Croatia, and Bosnia.
• Two new businesses will occupy the same location at 126 S. Main in Rock Port. Tender Touch, owned by Patricia Ideker, carries a unique line of herbs, spices, and specialties for diabetics. The other business, Tranquility, is owned by Janell Fischer, a massage therapist.
• The Rock Port Chamber of Commerce sponsored the Holiday Tree Tour at the Star Hill Prairie Art Institute Sunday, December 7. Winners of the tree contest were: 1st – Rock Port 6th grade, Victory Tree, “In honor of US veterans”; 2nd – Mrs. Cheri Zimmerman’s 1st grade, “Catch the Spirit of Christmas in Whoville with Mr. Grinch”; and 3rd – Rock Port Elementary K-6 Resource Class, “Reading is a Gift.”
