September 17, 1948
• Mrs. B. P. Hunter died at her home in Fairfax Saturday evening. Bertha came to Fairfax to manage the dry goods department of the Fairfax Mercantile Co., now the Hunter Dry Goods store.
• Ted and Melvin White, Charles Litherbury, and J.D. Carmean attended the Kansas State Fair at Topeka Thursday of this week. Two Shorthorn calves from the Ted White herd were exhibited by Warren and Sherlund Prawl of Severance, Kansas, as 4-H projects and received honors.
• From the number of entries in the Western Class Horse Show held on the 4-State Roundup grounds Wednesday night of last week, it appears there are lots of horses in this section of the country. Between 70 and 80 entries competed in the contests. The climax of the event was when the American Legion gave away its 1948 Chevrolet sedan. Mrs. Myrtle Horne of Tarkio was the lucky winner.
• Congressman William C. Cole of St. Joseph spoke to members of the County Liner 4-H Club and others in the high school auditorium Tuesday night. He told of the workings of Congress and of the many steps that must be taken to get federal laws passed.
September 20, 1973
• Twenty-three members of the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the Fairfax Christian Church gathered at the home of Mrs. K.R. Pennel Thursday of last week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the organization forming. Excerpts from early minute books were read.
• Following the regular meeting of the Fairfax Youth Fellowship Sunday evening, the group will go to the Jim Schooler farm for a pizza supper and slumber party. Those participating will go to school directly from Kountry Kitchen.
• Sharon Simmons Mitchell is now employed as a helper at Honey Tree Nursery School in Tarkio. She was formerly employed at the Fairfax hospital.
• The Community Club auction and barbecue will be held Monday. The funds raised will go to support a Christmas treat and decorating program.
September 17, 1998
• Organized in 1898 on September 26, 17 ladies of Fairfax started the Fairfax Sorosis study club and members have met continuously in the their homes for 100 years now. Members have studied an unbelievable variety of subjects including Shakespeare, the classics, current events, famous people, etc. Mrs. B.F. Van Lehn was the first president and Mrs. J.R. Walkup was the first critic.
• To celebrate 50 years of service to Fairfax and the surrounding area, the Community Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring the publication of a cookbook. Recipes are being solicited from present and former hospital personnel, doctors, nurses, auxilians, and everyone from the service area.
• Allison Lux, M.D., a graduate of Harvard Medical School and currently in her second year of Family Practice Residency at St. Luke’s Medical Center, is spending part of her rotation at the Tarkio Family Practice Center. Dr. Brent Hrabik is serving as her preceptor in a rural health clinic setting.
• Jerry Hayes, a Vietnam veteran and member of the Freedom Fest, held an assembly for Fairfax elementary students. He also sang a song he wrote about being in the war.
• The Fairfax R-3 School District offered free Hepatitis B shots to all students in grade two through 12. Mrs. Brown, Fairfax school nurse, reported that 64 students came in for the first series of shots.
