Shirley Marie Schoonover, the daughter of Ellsworth and Gracie (Foster) George, was born March 31, 1936, in Mound City, Missouri. She attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1954.

On December 7, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Clifford Dean “Skeet” Schoonover at the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, Missouri. They enjoyed 68 wonderful years together. They made their home in Rock Port and became parents of one daughter, Stephanie.

Shirley was employed by Coach House Restaurant as a waitress, worked with Mrs. Greenley at Greenley Grocery Store, and volunteered at the Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, gift shop. In the early 1960s, Shirley was employed by Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative where she worked for 37 years, retiring in the early 2000s.

Shirley was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, and First Lutheran Church Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Red Hatters. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Shirley passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 87.

Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters. Survivors include husband, Skeet Schoonover, Rock Port; daughter, Stephanie (Mark) Hull, Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren, Amy Roop and Erin (James) Hash, both of Clarinda; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other family members.

Memorial graveside service and inurnment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, conducted by Pastor Devon Sons. There is no scheduled visitation. Memorials may be directed to Rock Port Senior Center or First Lutheran Church, Rock Port. Arrangements are under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
