June 16, 1950

• Funeral services for Michael Martin Ryan, 76, were held Monday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio. Mr. Ryan was born October 18, 1873, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and moved with his family to a farm north of Tarkio when he was five. He lived the remainder of his life in this vicinity and was engaged in farming.

• Approximately 400 cars were served Sunday when Mac’s Drive-Inn, Tarkio’s first drive-in refreshment spot, opened. The new business is operated by Galen McMasters and is located a half block north of the junction of Highways 4 and 59 in Tarkio. Mr. McMasters has employed seven carhops: Mildred Kelly, Mary Elizabeth Collins, Maryruth Adams, Jane Kidney, Betty Lou Lane, Martha Lauman, and Dean Stevens.

• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “Golden Stallion” with Roy Rogers and Riders of the Purple Sage, “Red Hot and Blue” with Betty Hutton, and “Beyond The Forest” with Bette Davis and Joseph Cotton.

June 19, 1975

• Construction is underway on a new sidewalk in front of the former Clardy’s building on the south side of Main Street in Tarkio. The new sidewalk to be completed is in front of the Enos building on Main, which houses Bob’s Billiards and will soon house a new ice cream parlor.

• The high for the past week in Tarkio was 90 degrees recorded on the 13th and the low was 52 degrees on the 12th.

• Dr. Roy McIntosh has been appointed Dean of Educational Programs at Tarkio College.

• The Cindy and Eric Livengood residence on Main Street in Tarkio sustained damage to the roof, attic, and laundry room from an electrical wiring fire Friday morning, June 9. Water and smoke damage occurred throughout the residence.

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce sponsored a parade in conjunction with the Tarkio Rodeo Saturday, June 10. The parade grand marshal was Fran (Kelly) Minter of Rock Port. While growing up, Fran was a very active member of the Rough Riders in Atchison County and of the Tarkio High School Rodeo Association. In 1962, she was crowned the Missouri High School Rodeo Queen.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “People my age tend to travel in groups. Moneta Smith says that’s because it takes the entire group to make a sentence.” “My driving doesn’t bother Edna, she can’t see. However, last Thursday when we gave Chuck Sheppard a ride to Shenandoah, I noticed his clenched fists and white knuckles. He didn’t complain though. He probably thought it was too hot to hitchhike.”

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club selected Yards of the Month for June: Pam and Mac Rightsell, 400 Spruce; Donna and Donnie Meek, 11th and Park; Betty Lee, 904 College; Mary Kay and Jack Hixson, 6th and Park; Elise and Kenneth Butt, 704 Chestnut; and Craig McAdams, 605 Pine.
