James D. “Jim” Armstrong, 83, of Hamburg, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri.
James Dean Armstrong was born on October 18, 1941, at his home in Watson, Missouri, the son of John F. and Vera Mae (Thompson) Armstrong. He attended school in Watson, where he graduated with the class of 1959.
Jim was set up on a blind date with Barbara Reed by his friend, the late Joann Workman, and three years later they were united in marriage on September 29, 1962, at the First Baptist Church in Hamburg. Two children were born to this union: Mindy and Greg. Jim and Barbara would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary on September 29 of this year.
Jim worked as a car mechanic for 20 plus years at various places in Hamburg, including Dooley Motors, Livengood Pontiac, and Dick Murdock. He was in a partnership with Charlie Fox at C&J Auto before starting his own business, Jim’s Auto. He then worked as a rural letter carrier for 29 years before retiring. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club and the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department.
One of his passions was music and playing the guitar (he was self-taught). Jim played with various bands over the years, playing for wedding receptions, private parties, and on weekends at many different places all around the area. He also enjoyed golfing and most of all, spending time with his family. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed all their various activities.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Armstrong of Hamburg; children, Mindy Raymond (Rusty) of Hamburg, and Greg Armstrong of Hamburg; four grandchildren, Derek Mayberry of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jacob Raymond (Jackie) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Douglas Raymond (Elizabeth) of Lincoln, and Ciara Hunter (Jeff) of Rock Port, Missouri; five great-grandchildren, Asher and Auron Raymond, Saige and Scarlett Raymond, and Aubrie Hunter; two sisters, Holly Holmes (Chris) of Watson, and Lylith Gardner of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Patricia Bright of Omaha; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Gerald, Kenneth, Johnny, Jr., Gary, and Leo; sisters-in-law, Linda Armstrong, Carolyn Armstrong, Charlotte Armstrong, and Deann Armstrong; and brother-in-law, Casey Gardner.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Rash-Gude Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
