• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Winner Take All” with Joe Palooka, “Renegades of Sonora” with Allan Rocky Lane, “Feathered Serpent” with Chas. Chan, “My Blue Heaven” with Betty Grable and Dan Dailey, and “Father Is A Bachelor” with William Holden and Coleen Gray.
• R.L. Freeman of Tarkio has purchased two farms in the Clarksdale community, a 235-acre tract from Glenn Rowlett and an adjoining 120-acre tract from Freeman Schleup.
• Warmer temperatures this past week went as high as 80 degrees last Friday, the mercury falling to a minimum of 34 degrees Monday. Last Friday, high winds reached a peak velocity of 28 miles per hour with strong gusts. Precipitation amounted to .57 of an inch last Friday with a trace the following day.
• Monday the Tarkio Assembly of God Church will be host to an expected crowd of some four or five hundred persons representing churches of Section No. 1 of the Missouri Assembly of God Churches.
• Fresh from the laurels of their fourth consecutive win, which placed them in the lead of the 275 six-man football conference, the Westboro Wildcats will play Pickett tonight in a non-conference game on the Westboro field. The Wildcats, who defeated the Mound City Panthers 31-6 last Friday, will face Oregon next Friday at Westboro in conference action.

• Business and Professional Women members and personnel of the First National Bank and the Farmers and Valley banks were entertained at the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Smith in the country.
• Mr. and Mrs. C. “Slatts” Henson of Tarkio will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, October 19.
• Starting this week, copies of the Avalanche will be on sale at the magazine rack at the Hy-Vee store in Tarkio for 15¢ per copy.
• The two-story farm residence of the Robert Meier family northwest of Tarkio was completely destroyed by fire Monday afternoon. Wind gusts of 50 mph and onlookers who had their vehicles parked in the path of the tankers making their many trips to a pond hampered the efforts of three volunteer fire departments.

• Ask Elsie Fae column: “Open house at the North Polk School last Sunday was a real bell ringer. Mary Ann Ohrt, who as a child attended North Polk, told me that she has three grandchildren who are presently being taught in a country school outside Wahoo, Nebraska. Remembering her own experiences, she is very happy they have this unique opportunity. Out of town guests included Ray and Mary Yocom of Bellevue, Nebraska. Mary is the daughter of Carl Rolf (Mr. and Mrs. Rolf gave the school to Tarkio). Visitors traveling the greatest distance were Jeanette Huston’s two sisters, Mary of Alabama and Rose of New York.”
• The Atchison County Health Department gave 190 flu shots to area residents Thursday, October 5.
• The Westboro Fire Department purchased a 1999 dual Chevrolet 4-wheel drive pickup to be used to fight grass fires. It is equipped with a 300 gallon water tank.
