Jane Christen, who celebrated her 100th birthday January 9, also received a special surprise when she was selected to the Smucker’s 100th Birthday Club on the Today Show. Jane explained the secret to longevity is staying active by always taking the stairs. Jane was nominated by Ashley Pfeil Matsui, her long-time next door neighbor of more than 27 years. According to Ashley’s mom, Michele Pfeil, Ashley spent a lot of time over at Jane’s. Ashley’s daughter, Nora Jane, was named after Jane. Ashley now lives in Davenport, Iowa, so we reached out and asked Ashley, What makes Jane special to you?” Ashley commented, “Jane did all the little things that make a big impact on your life. She has always been there for our family. She has always welcomed us over to her house for a “tea party,” even as we got older. She listened to us read and read to us. She taught me how to crochet, and always asked me about my life. She always has a smiling face to greet us. Even though I now live 5 1/2 hours away, my family and I always visit when we are in town and nothing about her has changed. We often find her playing cards on the floor. She plays with my one-year-old and two-year-old like she’s in her 20s, often being rougher with them than they are with her.”
Congratulations to Jane on your 100th birthday. You have definitely made a positive impact on so many lives. Thank you.
