I am a U.S. Navy Veteran and served in Vietnam in 1965. As most of you readers know Vietnam Veterans were never recognized for their service. As a returning vet from Vietnam I was told not to wear my uniform and to be very careful around those that opposed the war. After being discharged from the Navy, I attended colleges in California which seemed to be the center of protest of Vietnam. Just turning 21 and serving in the war I did not understand the protest and did not appreciate the fact that we served doing our job and protecting the freedom of the United States of America.
On Veterans Day November 11, 2016 I finally got closure. I was recognized for my service by Rock Port Schools. We Veterans were marched around the halls of the elementary school (as heroes) and every student and teacher were there to give us thanks, flew flags, and made posters that were handed out to each and every veteran. What a site. A big thank you for each and every student and teacher. We then went to the library where we were introduced by the sixth grade students and had a question and answer period before being escorted to the main gym for beautiful songs by the choir, speech and taps. What a performance.
Mr. Walker I want to thank you for allowing the Rock Port Schools to do this for the veterans. You and your extended staff always do such a great job.
Special thanks to Mrs. Hastert, Mrs. Weber and all the Rock Port sixth grade students.
Regards and appreciation Vietnam Veteran,
Bob Jackson
