The Fairfax Optimist Club is making final plans for the 2016 Fairfax Fair, “Royal Celebration.” The 51st annual fair will be held Friday, August 12, through Sunday, August 14.
BOOTHS–
The Fairfax City Park will be bustling with activity Friday night and all day Saturday. There will be a variety of refreshments available and games of all kinds. If you’re feeling lucky, you can purchase a chance to win a prize at one of the booths. Organizations that have reserved booths include the following: Optimist Club, baseball throw game and frisbee toss game; Class of 2020, dunk tank; Fairfax Kiwanis, popcorn, lemonade, ring toss and raffle; Methodist Church Men’s Group, bouncy slide and tractor ride; Fairfax American Legion, toy tractor raffle; Fairfax American Legion Auxiliary, raffle; Rock Port American Legion, scooter raffle; Community Hospital Auxiliary, quilt raffle; Craig Presbyterian Church, quilt raffle; Great Northwest Wine fest, raffles; Flag Corps, fried Oreos; Class of 2018, food stand; FFA, pulled pork; FCCLA, baked potatoes; Masonic Lodge, hamburgers and pie; Atchison County Extension Council, corn dogs; Christian Church, cotton candy; Class of 2019, funnel cakes; Jay and Sarah, Arctic Ice.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 12–
The opening ceremonies will begin at 6:20 p.m. on Friday, August 12. The Little Mr. & Miss Fairfax contest is for children who are four, five and six years old and live in the Fairfax School District. They will be first on the stage at 6:30 p.m. sharp to be judged.
The Baby/Youth Show will follow with all youngsters welcome. This is a great time to show off the youth and allow parents, grandparents and the community the opportunity to be proud of our future leaders.
Babies from birth to 6 months will take the stage, followed by children in these categories: 7 to 11 months, 1 year to 23 months, 2 years to 35 months, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, and 6 years.
The Miss Fairfax and Junior Miss Fairfax contest will also be held Friday evening.
Six contestants will compete for the title of 2016 Miss Fairfax. They are Katy Baker, McKenzie Frohn, Jaycee Graves, Jesse Graves, Jaelynn Hill, and Shelbey Morris. This year’s Junior Miss Fairfax contestants are Haley Garrison, Gena Mitchell, and Olivia Morris.
The “Dance on the Slab” will be held Friday and Saturday nights, 9 – 11:30 p.m.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 13–
The Old Time Tractor Show at the Fairfax Fair will start at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The tentative location will be on the old hospital site west of the football field, so watch for old iron, pull in and join the fun! For more information call Harry Combs at 660-744-4775. Participants may also take part in the parade.
The Fair Parade will begin at 11 a.m. Registration will be at the football field. There will be a ping pong drop again this year. A plane will drop approximately 250 numbered ping pong balls on Main Street at 11 a.m. before the parade (weather permitting). An additional 100 balls will be tossed out from the Optimist Club’s float at the end of the parade. Each ball will receive a prize if turned in at the park stage between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. following the parade. (Only one prize per person.) Five ping pong balls will be worth $10.
Bill Slaughter has organized Saturday night’s program, which will begin at 6 p.m. Katy Baker will start the program singing “The Star Spangled Banner.” Others scheduled to perform include: cheerleaders, Vacation Bible School Singers, Erica Taylor, Alexis O’Farrell, Molly Carpenter, Josie Watkins, Mikaela Sons and Josie Watkins, Austin Acton and Conner Marshall, Gabby DeRosier, Ryan Hopkins, Susan Braams, Soldiers of the Cross, and Shawn Minter.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 14–
The Fairfax Ministerial Alliance will hold community church services in the Fairfax City Park Sunday, August 14, at 11 a.m. Pastor Bob Fleming of the Fairfax Christian Church will be the speaker.
The Fairfax After Prom Committee will host a community dinner Sunday, August 14, at the Community Room in the fire station, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will include smoked pork loin, baked beans, rolls, potato casserole, and a wide range of desserts. Support the community’s youth with a free will donation for their special night at prom in the spring!
The popular garden tractor pull will return to Fairfax this year. A Northwest Missouri Garden Tractor Pullers Sanctioned Event will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. The pull will take place on the west side of Hwy. 59, across from the old convenience store.
