
Gweneth C. Powell was born October 18, 1941, in Corpus Christi, Texas, and graduated from high school in Velma, Oklahoma, in 1959. She joined the United States Navy and during that time met and later married fellow sailor, Gary R. Powell.
Following their marriage on January 19, 1963, they moved to Iowa, where Gweneth worked as a CNA and Gary attended school. Gary graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1970.
Gweneth and Gary became parents of two children, Jeff and Kelly. The family moved to Rock Port in 1971.
Gary passed away on August 12, 2017. Gweneth passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019, at her Rock Port home.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, J.C. and Ola (Lewallen) Cowan; and brother-in-law, Joseph Powell. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Amanda Powell of Auburn, Nebraska; daughter, Kelly Chard of Rock Port; five grandchildren, Ashley (John) Currie, Trenton (Nicole) Powell, Josh Baughman, and Nate and Lexi Chard; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Delanye, and Justice Currie, and Calliegh Marriott; brothers, Glyndal (Kathy) Cowan of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Wyndal (Marla) Cowan of Duncan, Oklahoma; sister, Sharon Cowan of Duncan; and nieces and nephews, Christy Johnson, Jeana Meadows, Cary Todd Drummond, James Cowan, Melissa Cowan, Gayla Franklin, Mike Cowan, and Angela Groves.
Gweneth was an active member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, volunteering for many activities and singing in the choir. She was a member of the Red Hatters club and the former Sweet Adelines.
Family visitation will be held Tuesday, February 26, 2019, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Rock Port United Methodist Church. Services will be held Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Rock Port United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will take place at Riverton Cemetery, Riverton, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Chamberlain Funeral Home, Rock Port.
