Materials having been released and a loan of $100,000 from the Rural Electrification Authority having been granted, the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative will shortly ask for bids for the construction of 116 miles of new lines in Atchison, Holt, and Nodaway counties in Missouri, Fremont and Page counties in Iowa and Nemaha County, Nebraska (Kaufman Island). This additional mileage will serve 262 new farmer members of the cooperative, many of whom have had applications for service on file for a number of months.

The Citizens Bank has added to its bookkeeping force Mrs. Roy Tanner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Peck, who has been in Los Angeles since her marriage some months ago. Her husband is in the service and Mrs. Tanner will remain here until he returns to civilian life, making her home with her parents.

March 6, 1969

Mr. and Mrs. Verdeen Hennings have purchased Don’s Drive In on Highway 136 from Mr. and Mrs. Don Tharp. The Hennings plan to start remodeling and repair work right away on the building. They will operate a drive-in  cafe featuring broasted chicken and pizza with a delivery service in Rock Port. They hope to be able to be open in about three weeks.

Three mayors of Atchison County signed the proclamation for Girl Scout week which begins March 9 and will be continued until March 15. They are celebrating their 57th anniversary. There are 160 Girl Scouts in the county. The Girl Scout organization was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low and throughout the years they still have held firm to their theme “Values to Hold, Worlds to Explore.”

Ken and Donna Lucas, Rock Port, had their names added to the Extension Leaders Honor Roll at the annual meeting of the Atchison County University of Missouri Extension Council meeting held Thursday. March 3. The Extension Honor Roll recognizes individuals statewide who contribute time and service to developing and carrying out Extension Programs. Ken and Donna have been long time supporters of Extension in Atchison County, especially active in programming supporting youth.

The Rock Port Family Practice Center is open and Dr. Knauss is seeing patients. The clinic is located in the west wing of Pleasant View Nursing Home. The clinic offers complete family health services including osteopathic manipulation.
