A one-vehicle accident on Hwy. 59 in Holt County injured two Tarkio women on Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2017. The accident occurred a half mile north of Craig, Missouri, when a 2004 Nissan Frontier, driven by Penny S. Caldwell, 45, of Tarkio, was headed southbound on Hwy. 59. The Frontier traveled off the west side of the roadway onto the shoulder. Caldwell overcorrected and the vehicle slid out of control, returned to the roadway, traveled across the center line and slid off the west side of the roadway. The front driver’s side of the vehicle struck an embankment. The Frontier overturned and came to rest on its top facing southeast off the west side of the road.
Caldwell, who was wearing a seat belt, received moderate injuries and was taken by Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri. A passenger, Martha J. Johnson, 50, of Tarkio, who was not wearing a seat belt, also received moderate injuries and was transported by LifeNet to Mosaic.
The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal S. M. Hux, who was assisted by Sgt. M. P. Quilty, the Holt County Sheriff’s Department, Mound City Rural Fire Department, and Craig Fire Department.
