East Atchison competes in first jr. high wrestling matches of the season
The East Atchison Jr. High Wrestling Team has begun its 2017 season. The wrestlers began their season at the Sidney Quad in Sidney, Iowa, February 21, 2017. Teams participating besides East Atchison included Sidney/SWI, Rock Port, Falls City, and Hamburg. EA results follow: Lucas Joesting, 0-3; Braiden Wennihan, 1-1; Brianna Maxwell, 1-1; Kaylin Merriweather, 1-2; Bo Graves, 3-0; Aaron Schlueter, 0-3; Jesse Navin, 0-3; and Jayden Umbarger, 1-2.
The grapplers then traveled to Falls City, Nebraska, to compete in a tournament February 23. Teams participating besides East Atchison were HTRS/Pawnee City, Rock Port, Connestoga, Johnson County Central, Falls City, and Auburn. Individual results for East Atchison include: Jaden Clark, 1-3, 4th place; Lucas Joesting, 2-2, 3rd place; Braiden Wennihan, 0-4, 5th place; Cameron Nance, 2-2, 3rd place; Brianna Maxwell, 0-4, 5th place; Kaylin Merriweather, 3-1, 2nd place; Bo Graves, 2-2, 3rd place; Aaron Schlueter, 3-1, 2nd place; Jesse Navin, 0-4, 5th place; and Jayden Umbarger, 1-3, 4th place.

East Atchison Winter Sports Banquet March 9- The East Atchison Winter Sports Banquet will be held Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fairfax R-3 Gymnasium. If your high school student participated in basketball, wrestling or cheerleading, you are invited to attend. Each family is asked to bring two side dishes. The freshmen and seniors are asked to bring a salad and dinner rolls. Sophomores and juniors are asked to bring a vegetable and dessert. Because of the large amount of people who attend, please make extra large batches. This ensures that those who are towards the end of the service line will have the same choice of food as those who are at the first of the line. The meat, potatoes and drinks will be provided for you. Bring your own dinner service (plate, cup, napkin, silverware).
Kindergarten Round-Up- There will be a short meeting for the parents of 2017-2018 Tarkio Elementary kindergarten students on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. in the elementary library. The kindergarten handbook will be distributed and kindergarten procedures and expectations will be discussed. Parents are asked to bring a copy of their student’s birth certificate and Social Security card to the meeting.
On Thursday, March 30, kindergarten screenings will take place at Tarkio Elementary. Appointments can be made by calling the elementary at 660-736-4177, prior to the screening date if you are unable to attend this meeting. The VIP Day will be on Friday, April 28, 2017. The future kindergarteners will arrive at 8:30 a.m., become familiar with the classroom and take a bus ride. Parents are invited to eat lunch with their children and following lunch, they may take their children with them.
Early Childhood Screenings at Tarkio Elementary- Early Childhood Screenings will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. These screenings are put on by the Parents As Teachers program and Tarkio Elementary. They are for children age 3-5 years who will be attending preschool next fall or who are currently in preschool and will be attending again in the fall. As long as the child is 3 by August 1, they are invited to participate. A separate screening day for kids entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2017 will be held later on. Children will be screened in the areas of motor skills, language, and concepts, along with a health, hearing and vision screening by school nurse Janene McEnaney. Fairfax Hospital Physical Therapy Department will also be aiding in the screening process. Screenings are an important part of your child’s young years to make sure they are developmentally on track and as with anything, early detection of a problem is best! Screenings are by appointment that day and you may call Mary Beth in the Tarkio Elementary office to schedule a time to bring your child in. You may also contact Shannon Bruns, Parent Educator for Parents As Teachers, at 660-541-3914 with any questions. This is a FREE service and the school encourages you to participate in this screening. Times will fill up fast, so call soon!

Tarkio students compete in Elementary Math Contest- The Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsored the Annual Missouri Elementary Student Math Contest. The contest was conducted at approximately twenty qualifying sites across Missouri. During the 2016-2017 school year, over 2,500 student in grades four, five, and six participated. Twenty-one students from Tarkio Elementary School competed in the Qualifying Contest on Saturday, February 18, 2017, held at Northeast Nodaway High School in Ravenwood, Missouri. Student sponsor and 4th grade teacher Erica Taylor and Principal Dr. Deborah Taylor are pleased that students from the school were willing to prepare and represent their school in this statewide event.
Individual event winners from Tarkio included: Daniel Lesher, who received 5th place overall on the Number Sense Test, in the 6th grade age group, qualifying him to move on to the Regional competition. In addition to Daniel, four other students also qualified to compete at Regionals: Lizzie Schlueter (4th grade), Alex Barnett and Alexis Bywater (5th grade), and Rylie Simmons (6th grade). Regional competition will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Other Tarkio students who competed included: 4th Grade – Owen DeRosier, Makenna Carder, Jacob Shubkagel, and Abbie Harms; 5th Grade – Ian Stepp, Jozee Eaton, Tommi Martin, Brooklyn Wennihan, and Claire Martin; and 6th Grade – Grace Peck, Tanner Rollins, Gaven Talty, William Kimpston, Connor Brown, and Jared Stanton.

KIDS KORNER
Spotlight- Jasper Harbin
Jasper is a 3 year old who is new to Kids’ Korner and making new friends. He is the son of Jake and Kristen Harbin. His favorite color is yellow. His favorite foods are bacon and melon, that he enjoys eating with Papa. He enjoys Paw Patrol books and music from Tangled. His favorite part of preschool is story and snack time. His favorite place to go in Tarkio is Casey’s, where he enjoys the pizza and hashbrowns.
Spotlight- Vera Hale
Vera, the daughter of Heidi Hale and Cory Hale, is a 4 year old attending Kids’ Korner. Her favorite color is pink. Her favorite food is corn. She likes it off the cob the most. One of her favorite books is The Day the Dinosaurs Died. She likes the song “Skidamarink”. Vera’s favorite time at school is the writing center. Her two favorite places to go in Tarkio are Dollar General and Casey’s, both for snacks.
