Rock Port has a new mayor and two new councilmen as a result of probably the wildest write-in election ever held in the city. Ray Shubat was named mayor after receiving 90 write-in votes. Runner-up was incumbent John Wanamaker with 56, who announced he would not serve a second term if elected. A total of 21 write-in candidates were with several receiving one or two votes. Voters continued their write-in policy right on down through the ticket with several write-ins for South Ward alderman although there was a declared candidate, Jimmie Hedgpeth, who won with 117 votes followed by Charles (Stub) Taylor with 25 votes. Harold Hulett, chief of police, received the most write-in votes for city marshal with 55, but he is ineligible to hold the post according to state law, not having qualified under the length of residency.
