After a long winter of cancellations and way too much snow and ice, Sorosis met at the Daybreak Café. We greeted each other like long lost relatives with hugs all around. Since Georgia is in charge of music she got our attention by leading us in her version of McNamara’s Band. Those of us who could remember a few words joined in. St. Patrick’s Day was Sunday the day before our meeting, but no one cared. We all have a little Irish in us.
President Debbie Johnson called the meeting to order. She announced that because of problems with communications we would go back to using the calling log in our Sorosis books for changes and notifications.
Roll call was “My Favorite Spring Flower.” Many flowers were named and now we wait patiently for them to appear.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and after one correction, approved. The treasurer’s report was given and approved.
The corresponding secretary read a letter from the School Academic Committee thanking us for our donation in 2018 and requesting we again support them in 2019. Georgia made a motion to send them $25 and Judy seconded her motion. All approved.
New Business: Judy brought to our attention that we could avoid cancellations in colder months of January and February by cancelling meetings in those months. We could then begin our year one month earlier in September and end one month later in April. After a short discussion, Pam made a motion that in 2019 we begin our meetings in September, cancel meetings in January and February, and end our year in April. Martha seconded the motion and all approved.
Critic Report from Judy: Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. Good thought.
The business meeting was adjourned and Debbie introduced Monica Bailey, Executive Director of Atchison County Development Corporation, our program for the day. Monica described to us what ACDC does to support our county. They work to retain our young people and expand and help establish new business. They promote events that encourage shopping locally and supporting local businesses. She encouraged us to get out and vote on April 2. The ½ cent economic sales tax is a much needed source of income. Thanks to Monica we now have a much better understanding of what ACDC has to offer to the residents of Atchison County.
At this time hostess Betty Wennihan presented Monica with a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers and we thanked her for coming.
The Bon Mot and Collect were read and the meeting was adjourned so that we could enjoy a piece of pie and ice cream on our hostess Betty’s ticket at the Daybreak Café.
