The Mail offers no apology for a four page paper on this week. Trying to conserve on newsprint and up against the proposition of woeful lack of help in the mechanical department, this curtailed edition is necessary. Without a male employee in the pressroom our subscribers will have to bear with us until conditions better themselves. William D. Anderman, employee of the Mail for 18 years, has been ordered to report for army duty next week.

May 15, 1969

The Ralph Boettner family will be this year’s State Fair Farm Family from Atchison County. The Boettners were picked for this honor recently at the regular meeting of Atchison County’s University Extension Council. This program, setting aside a special day to honor farm families, was started in the mid-fifties by the Missouri State Fair. These families are picked by the University Extension Councils in each county. They are selected on the basis of their community and church activities and being leading farmers in the community. The Boettners live on a farm about ten miles north of Rock Port. They own 160 acres and farm an additional 240 acres. Mr. and Mrs. Boettner have three children. They are Rebecca, age 12, and twins, Richard and Rachel, age 8. This family will be honored along with other farm families from all over the state at the Missouri State Fair.

The Blue Jay Boys’ Golf Team traveled to Albany May 9 to compete in the District Golf Tournament. The Jays faced eight other teams in the tournament and still brought home the District title. Cory Scamman tied for first in the district with a score of 77, while Tad Gebhards took the 3rd place honor with a score of 80.
