Senior Gabe Minter had 30 all purpose yards and 2 tackles against Union Star, helping the Blue Jays with their 36-16 win.

Junior Trey Peshek had 2 punts for 73 yards in Friday’s game.

The Rock Port Blue Jays traveled to King City, Missouri, on Friday night to take on the WildKats. Players, coaches and fans were getting adjusted to the weather conditions as this was the first rainy start to a game this season. After last week’s loss, the question was, how would the Blue Jays respond?

The Jays kicked off to start the game. Joey Herron’s kick went to the 15 yard line, on a reverse the WildKats brought it out to the 35 yard line before being tackled from behind by Colten Stevens. On the fifth play of the opening drive, the WildKats went to the air for the questionable catch and picked up a score. The two-point conversion was good, giving the Kats the first lead of the night.

Herron took the kick-off back to the 39 yard line giving the Jays good field position. On runs by Stevens and Herron, the Jays were able to move the ball to the WildKats’ 35 yard line before getting called on two penalties, a hold and an offsides, moving the ball back to their 36 yard line and forcing a punt.

This time the Jays’ defense was awake, shutting them down in three and forced a punt. With Gabe Minter’s return to the 32, fullback Stevens would take the hand off from quarterback Alex Burke for nine yards. Herron took the hand-off from Burke and went off left side and bounced it out for the touchdown. Stevens’ two-point conversion was good knotting it up at 8s.

Following the kick-off, both the WildKats and the Blues Jays had unsuccessful drives.

King City/UnionStar ran one play before the first quarter came to an end. When play resumed, the Kats would break a long run and a touchdown which was called back on a holding penalty. On a quick out, the WildKats’ receiver moved the ball to the 12 yard line of the Jays. On a quarterback keeper the Kats took the lead 8-16.

Colten Stevens got the Jays rolling with two good runs up the middle for the first down and good field position. Burke was able to move the ball down to the five yard line with runs by Herron and Stevens. Herron took a quick pitch and found the corner pylon for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was good making the score 14-16 King City/Union Star.

Rock Port’s defense stepped up again and shut down King City/Union Star. With a bad punt, the Jays started with great field position on the Kats’ 31 yard line, but the Jays couldn’t take advantage. However, the Jays’ defense came up big once again when defensive back Trey Peshek came up with the interception. The offense just couldn’t get into a rhythm before time expired in the first half.

Rock Port started the second half on the 15 yard line. Offensively, the Jays struggled to start with two unsuccessful drives. The defense, however, would shut the WildKats down in the second half not allowing a single point to be scored. The Jays were moving the ball down the field with runs from Micah Makings, Herron and Stevens, who moved the ball to the 11 yard line before time would expire in the third quarter. With a third and long Herron took the hand-off from Burke for six points and his two point conversion was good, making the score 22-16. Following that score, Alex Burke scored on a quarterback keeper. Defensive linebacker Cayden Criger had an exciting interception and a pick six towards the end of the ball game. The Jays would go on to win 36-16.

The Blue Jays will host Southwest Livingston at Blue Jay Stadium this Friday.
