A representative group of citizens from all sections of Atchison County gathered at The Ritz Thursday evening of last week for a dinner and to talk over a proposition for a county hospital, which has been agitated for some time. Tarkio, Fairfax, Westboro, Watson, Rock Port and other communities were represented at the meeting. The need of a hospital in this county has been apparent for  some years, and a proposal that the county should have such an institution has several times been broached, without any seeming progress. The matter is now being given more serious consideration.

The Atchison County Mail has been designated a “National Blue Ribbon Newspaper” for 1969-1970 by the National Editorial Foundation, an arm of the National Newspaper Association. In announcing the designation, Foundation President George Wortley, III, Fayetteville, New York, noted that The Atchison County Mail was one of the first newspapers to submit itself for the evaluation. Twenty-five criteria, measuring the newspaper’s service to its community against a national standard, were employed in judging. The Foundation, established in 1956, is dedicated to the improvement of Journalism and Journalism Education.
