The Tarkio R-I Board of Education met October 16, 2019. The meeting was called to order by Board President Jeff Meyer at 7:00 p.m. Other board members present were: Jamie Barnett, Steve Klute, Chris Yates, Garrett Wood, Ann Schlueter, and Sam Hannah. Others in attendance were: Karma Coleman, superintendent; Carrie Livengood, high school principal; Kari Taylor, elementary principal; Lanette Hogue, board secretary; and Markie Sundermann, Deyton Thomson, Jennifer Peregrine, Lesley Graves, Shannon Bruns, Lisa Clement, Rachel Meyer, Maria Spire, Terry Wooten and Jayne Martin, staff.
Board members voted to approve the consent agenda and district obligations.
Committee Reports
CTA Report – The high school choir and theater department are working on this year’s musical. The high school band is finishing up their marching season. Mrs. Barnett has started an after school program with some of the elementary students and they are working on keyboard and piano. First grade took a trip to Arbor Farms in Nebraska City and kindergarten took a field trip to Henry Doorly Zoo.
TAC Report – Rachel Meyer reported that the junior high basketball teams have started having practice at TAC. Volleyball districts will be at TAC October 28 and 30. Richard Fetterer plans to start a martial arts program. The school held the homecoming pep assembly and 5th quarter at TAC.
Food Service Report – Mrs. Swaby provided a food service report. The school received $375 in donations to help with student lunch accounts. She is working on the annual food service report that is due the first of November.
Administrative Reports
Kari Taylor, Elementary Principal, reported the elementary has 178 students enrolled preschool through fifth grade and 98% attendance. They hosted a game night, and have had two golden ticket ceremonies. Delta Dental did a presentation for kindergarten through third grade. The first round of NWEA testing is complete in the elementary and she shared results.
Carrie Livengood, High School Principal, reported there are 175 enrolled in sixth through 12th grades with 96% attendance. Girls’ golf has ended and had a successful year with four golfers making it to sectionals. The boys’ cross country team placed second at Conference. Mrs. Wennihan took 32 students to an FCCLA event at NWMSU. Mrs. Cooper took the sophomores to the My Success Event at St. Joseph. Junior high basketball has started. There will be an assembly on vaping October 22 for students in sixth through 12th grades.
Karma Coleman, Superintendent, gave a financial report. The APR is being released October 17 with preliminary results. Mrs. Coleman shared a Tarkio College newsletter and a report from Opaa!. Bids will be taken to resurface the track. The freezer monitors have been installed. Next year volleyball is going to go to the best of three out of five sets, which could affect scheduling for volleyball games next year, as well as increase costs. New banners will be purchased for the TAC to include conference banners, Tarkio championship banners as well as EA championship banners, and new record boards that are provided by the boosters.
Old Business
Chris Yates and Garrett Wood met with the Fairfax representatives in September to discuss the EA co-op agreement. They reported that it was a very positive meeting and another meeting will be scheduled soon.
New Business
Board members voted to approve the renewal of two CDs for seven months at 2%.
Board members approved the budget amendments as presented.
Mrs. Coleman discussed the possibilities of contracting transportation because of the lack of bus drivers and the expense of purchasing new buses. She will look into getting bids.
Mrs. Coleman will have bids for the football clock at the November board meeting.
There was discussion on student drug testing and a policy was reviewed.
Board members voted to approve the Tarkio R-I Food Service Code of Conduct.
Board members voted to go into closed session pursuant to RSMo §610.001, Record and vote, at 8:30 p.m. The board members came out of closed session and adjourned the meeting at 8:50 p.m.
