Rock Port traveled to Graham, Missouri, to take on the South Holt/Nodaway-Holt Spartans for the eighth game of the season. This was a hard-fought battle for the Blue Jays, but they came up short in the end with a final score of 54-26.
The Jays would put the first points on the board following an onside kick and recover. Running back Joey Herron caught a quick pitch from quarterback Alex Burke and took it 43 yards around the right end for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good. Herron kicked a low line drive ball that was recovered by the Spartans. Eight plays later the Spartans would answer with a five yard sweep around left end. The point after was good making the score 7-6. As the first quarter was coming to an end the Spartans would add another 6 points giving them a 13-6 lead. The Rock Port offense would move the ball to mid-field before punting. During the Spartans’ next drive they would go to the air for another touchdown making the score 19-6. The PAT was no good. The Spartans would try another onside kick giving the Jays the ball at the 40 yard line. Rock Port tried to go to the air connecting on a fourth and 8 with Colten Stevens. Colten picked up six before getting knocked out of bounds. The Spartans would take over on downs. Five plays later on a 15 yard quarterback keeper the Spartans would add another six points to the board. The point after was good making the score 26-6. Joey Herron would get a good return on the kick-off and give the Jays the ball on the 38 yard line. Micah Makings would catch a quick out from Burke and take it to the 20 yard line. With runs by Herron and Makings the Jays moved the ball to the one yard line before Colten Stevens took it up the middle for six. The two-point conversion was no good making the score 26-12 with 55.7 seconds before the half.
Following half-time both SHNH and RP would run two offensive series that didn’t score. On Rock Port’s next possession they would fumble the ball giving the Spartans the ball on the five yard line. Two plays later they found the end zone. The two-point conversion was no good making the score 32-12. That would end the third quarter.
The Spartans would score again before the Jays would answers with a long 40 yard pass to Gabe Abbott over the middle. The two-point conversion was no good making the score 40-18. SHNH would once again score two more times before the Jays were able to answer with a 65 yard run by Joey Herron around the left end. Makings’ two-point conversion was good making the final score 54-26. The Jays will play Mound City at home Friday night for Parents’ Night.
