November 17, 1944

• Dr. Ralph Waldo Emerson, evangelist of Kansas City, will preach at the Christian Church Sunday morning. Mr. Emerson, a relative of Ralph Waldo Emerson of American literature fame, comes from a family of generations of ministers.

• A four-engine bomber crashed on the Rudolph (Babs) Staples farm eight miles east of Tarkio yesterday afternoon about 2:10 o’clock. When it struck the ground about a quarter of a mile north of Highway No. 4, it exploded and burned, so that in a few minutes time about all that could be identified was the tail assembly. The crew, comprised of 13 members, had baled out prior to the crash, and two officers, the pilot and co-pilot were found uninjured within a mile or two of the wreckage. The large craft fell into a bunch of Mr. Staples’ cattle and killed six head and injured and burned others. The Dunfees, who operate the farm, lost 150 hens. All of the buildings except the house were burned to the ground as were the contents, including oats and hay. A hole was gouged in the corner of the house by a flying part.

November 20, 1969

• The mercury rose to a high of 61 degrees on the 16th and a low of 14 on the 14th with a half-inch of snowfall on the 14th.

• Bill Smith, Dave Matheny, Roger Levings, Allen Kemerling, Russ Schinpoch, Ed Hunkins, Dick Bell, Danny Erickson, and Darrell Smith were named to the 275 All-Conference Football Teams.

• Airman Steven F. Campbell, USN, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt in Mayport, Florida. The ship is operating in the Jacksonville area in preparation for deployment in late December.

• Sixty-four men harvested the crops for the Rankin Sheets family as an expression of sympathy for their recent loss of two children. The workers met at noon for a meal prepared by a number of women which was furnished by numerous interested people.

November 17, 1994

• The Tarkio High School Football Team defeated North Platte in State Sectionals and Hardin-Central in State Quarterfinals to advance to the State Semi-Finals this Saturday, November 19, against North Shelby.

• Vern Rollins traveled from his home in Anchorage, Alaska, to Atchison County, Missouri, to bag a big buck during deer hunting season. He killed an 18 point buck on Monday, November 14. Vern has family in the area and used to live here himself.
