A snow which started falling Tuesday evening continued through the night, all day Wednesday and until nightfall that day brought this section the heaviest snowfall of the season. Ranging up to a depth of 15-16 inches, the wet, clinging substance blocked roads, put a stop to traffic, delayed mails, closed most of the schools and badly disrupted business in general. Cars were stalled on Main Street, and Wednesday evening’s Burlington bus from the south spent the night in Rock Port because of blocked highways. Cars which were parked on the streets and not moved for 24 hours or more were all but buried in the heavy snowfall. As shovelers got busy Thursday morning, great heaps of snow were piled along the gutters, and will be some time melting away, unless the sun gets busy and clears it away.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Librarians Club held a sweetheart contest. The sweethearts of Rock Port High School are seniors Devonia Duhon and Tim Whelan. This contest was actually a money raising project for the librarians to supplement their funds for a spring trip. Each class elected a girl and boy to run as a team for the title of High School Sweethearts. To vote, pennies were deposited in jars, one penny for each vote. The class that had the most votes in their jar won the title of sweethearts as well as an award from the librarians. The candidates were: Donna Brockman and Duane Bedell, juniors; Teresa Wharton and Jerry Lutz, sophomores; and Janey Ludwig and Mike Million, freshmen.

The junior high, the freshmen and the sophomores have been working on CO2 dragster cars in Mr. Eickoff’s shop class. They had to plan the cars, make mock-ups, and then build the final cars. They had a lot of fun putting the cars together and then playing with them. The next project for the classes will be to make robots.
Rock Port spellers won first and second place in the spelling bee. Brock Bastow won first place and Ryan Hance won second. They will advance to Northwest Missouri Regional Competition Saturday, March 11, in St. Joseph.
