Twenty-five Boy Scouts from Rock Port had the privilege of attending and participating in a jamboree held at the municipal auditorium in St. Joseph last Saturday. The trip was made possible through the generosity of Mrs. May Curnutt, Walter Mercer, Willard Scamman and Corporal Cohen, who furnished cars to transport the Scouts to St. Joseph.

Atchison County draft board has received a call for 17 men for induction into the armed forces on Tuesday, May 1. The men will leave that morning for the Ft. Leavenworth induction center.

April 23, 1970

The Rock Port Community Garden Club is continuing their drive to plant trees and shrubs to replace dead elms and beautify Rock Port. The club made planting of three Redmond Linden trees and two compact Phitzer evergreens on the Memorial Building lawn. They plan to continue making evergreen foundation plantings over the next two years.

Burke and Sons have started on the ground work for the new five unit building at Fair Haven housing complex in Pine Acres addition in southeast Fairfax. With the weather cooperating, the project should progress toward completion before late summer.

The Memorial Building is taking on a new look with the new plantings contributed and planted by the Garden Club. New flagpoles and the foundation for the Peace Memorial monument were poured this week. Dedication ceremonies will be Memorial Day, May 30, with a parade and the dedication program.

Get ready . . . get set . . . it’s time to go to the 10th Annual Pelican Pursuit Running and Walking Event, sponsored by the Development Council of Community of Community Hospital, Saturday morning, April 22 at Big Lake State Park. An attraction for the younger generation is the 1-Mile Kid Run/Walk scheduled at 10:30. This event allows the children or adult walkers and babies in strollers to participate without being in the path of the serious, avid runners going for a record run.

The first graders held a Book It pizza party on Friday, April 7. Both classes met the minimum requirements by reading three or more books each month. Mrs. Zimmerman’s top reader was B.J. Floyd, who read 212 books. Jordan Freborg from Mrs. Hance’s class read 72 books.
