• Mrs. E.J. Evans remarked while cleaning a fryer the other day that considering the price of chickens, they should have gold nuggets inside them. The gold was found, to her great amazement, in the form of a small heart-shaped locket inside the gizzard. The name on the locket was still readable, “Ruth Ann.” The chicken had been obtained from Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Thompson, who reside on the old W.F. Baker farm at the south edge of Tarkio.

• A bolt of lightning Tuesday morning was kind enough to choose the telephone instead of the lady of the house or the house itself. Mrs. H.R. Volker was surprised to find her telephone completely burned out inside, but her home did not take fire. For about a quarter of a mile from the residence, telephone wires were broken from the poles and the insulators stripped.

June 11, 1970

• Articles were taken from a storage house of the Maxwell Bridge Co., near the site of the new span on Interstate 29, south of Hamburg, Iowa. The loot included a $300 surveyor’s level, a $350 transit and tripod, a $300 chain saw, two lanterns, a $20 radio, and other equipment valued at a total of $1,000. A Hamburg youth was charged with breaking and entering after a Hamburg father and son contacted Atchison County law enforcement about a youth driving a tractor over nursery rows. The loot was found in the teen’s car parked nearby.

• Employment of Kay Jean Pierpoint as one-half time Remedial Reading instructor and Winifred Colville as instructor and tutor in Remedial Math by the Tarkio R-I Board of Education completes Tarkio’s faculty for next year.

June 8, 1995

• Tarkio Academy students painted fire hydrants along Main Street and on the Academy campus in Tarkio.

• Tarkio Academy students and Tarkio Post Office employees conducted a food drive on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, 1995. Approximately 450 pounds of food items were collected and delivered to the local food bank.

• Tarkio will be the site of a URA/MRCA Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10, 1995. Several rodeo events will be featured including bareback riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, over 40 calf roping, and bull riding.
