• Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith have purchased the former Sinclair Service Station and lunch room from Mrs. Ollie Dean Weyland of Tarkio. The station is on Highway 275 across the street from the elevator. Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wennihan, are preparing to open the business soon.
• Although probably the latest in many years, corn planting in this section is at last practically finished. The last week afforded farmers the opportunity to complete the job, although the acreage has been materially decreased due to the fear that corn planted so late would not mature. Corn that is up is looking fine and good stands are reported.
July 9, 1970
• Walking off with 27 ribbons and two trophies were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vaught at the South Iowa Poultry Association Show June 27 and 28. The Silver-laced Wyandotte cock received a trophy from the sponsoring association and also from the international Silver-laced Wyandotte Association. The Vaughts, who have been showing chickens for the last few years, entered 27 birds and won 13 blue ribbons, nine second place ribbons, and four third places.
• The lawn of Miss Beulah Hunter was selected for Garden Club “Yard of the Month” honors for July. Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Sly in northeast Fairfax were named second place winners.
July 6, 1995
• On June 18, nine youth left for six days for Angel Fire, New Mexico. Along with Rev. Ed and Deanna Morrison and Jay and Stephanie Smith, the youth worked on two houses under construction for Habitat for Humanity in Taos, New Mexico. The group also gave a contribution, besides their labor, made possible by donations.
• Helen’s Place is closing its doors on Main Street after almost five years. Owner, Helen Golden, introduced Fairfax to the craft world these past years and there were many crafters who displayed their wares in her store.
• The Community Hospital Auxiliary put some more of their hard earned money to good use recently when they spent $2,656 for a much needed portable whirlpool for the physical therapy department at the hospital.
