• Charlotte, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Taylor, who live on the M.A. Williams place, three and one-half miles southeast of Fairfax, narrowly escaped serious injury last Thursday when she fell from the bridge that crosses Little Tarkio Creek, to the creek bed 26 feet below. Luckily she did not fall into the water which was dangerously deep at that place. Charlotte suffered some painful bruises and scratches about the head and hips, but no bones were broken.

• Sheriff’s Corner: Well, it looks like Atchison County is going to be blessed with a bumper crop of marijuana again this year. In order to keep our “weed picking” at a minimum, it is necessary for all of us to “get involved.” Farmers should be alert for anyone near their hemp patches and feed stores and elevators should be suspicious of anyone buying feed sacks who have no apparent need for them. Often they will purchase corn knives, burlap bags, plastic bags, etc. locally instead of taking a chance carrying them across country.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Far up the Missouri River near Sioux City, Iowa, fishermen are landing piranha measuring 12 and 13 inches long. That type of fish can’t live in cool water and I can imagine fishermen in that area on the river are wishing for ice to float pretty dang quick!”
