• Dr. J.B. Hunkins, veterinarian, who has been living in Watson for quite a while, has located in Rock Port. He has his headquarters in the Bob Underwood building on South Main Street.
• The new Fairbanks-Morse diesel engine which has been installed at the municipal light plant in recent weeks was put into service the first of the week, adding considerably to the plant’s generating capacity.
• Rock Port schools are all set for the opening of another term of school next Monday, September 3. Superintendent Houston and Mrs. Mabel Newton carried out the preliminary registration of high school pupils last week with the town filled with boys and girls the two days of registration.

• Atchison County’s University Extension Center moved Monday to its new location in Rock Port at 518 South Main Street just south of the Fire Station. The new center location has been leased from Mr. and Mrs. Don Lininger. The new facility includes five separate offices, a meeting room, kitchen, and soil laboratory. In addition, there are two other offices which are to be sub-leased to the Atchison County Farm Bureau.
• Mr. and Mrs. Ross Herron of Rock Port left August 21 with a tour group for a tour of the Orient. They will visit the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan, with stopovers in Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. The group is also scheduled to spend a day in Hawaii on their way home.
• Work began this week on a million dollar relocation of U.S. 136 in the Rock Port area with the prime contractor Land Construction and Clark Construction, St. Joseph, moving onto the job and holding their first pre-construction conference with the State Highway Department according to Stanley Stubblefield, resident engineer of the state. The two co-bidders will be involved in relocating the route from the Vogler property east of Route Y through Rock Port to the west to junction with U.S. 275 west of Hill’s Top Kick Oil Co. A temporary structure will be installed over Rock Creek in Rock Port while a new bridge is under construction.

• Doris Stoner was honored Monday, August 28, with an open house at the Motor Vehicle License Office where she has served old and young drivers alike for 19 1/2 years. Doris began her career with the office in 1976 and will complete her service as of August 31, 1995. Melanie Riley will be taking her place.
• The Rock Port Rotary Club held its annual “Meet the Teachers” picnic on Tuesday, August 22, at the Rock Port City Park. New and current teachers and their families were treated to a potluck dinner served by the Rotary and local residents. New teachers include Sarah Gaines, Stephen Gaines, Lynn Hunter, David Jarrett, Jim Skillen, Hope Droegemueller, and new full-time cook is Sharon Bennington.
• A new go kart race track is being developed by Mark Finnell west of Rock Port and south of the Hwy. 275 and Hwy. 136 junction. They will not rent go karts. This is an official race track.
