September 28, 1945

• One of the most outstanding events that has occurred for some time to honor an Atchison County person happened Tuesday of this week when a luncheon was held at the Central Cafe Palm Room in Rock Port honoring Miss Minnie J. Strobel’s 25th anniversary as a public health nurse. Miss Strobel received her diploma as a registered nurse in October of 1917 after completing training at the Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph. She enlisted in the Red Cross foreign service in January, 1918, and sailed for France in May of that same year, serving for a year in two base hospitals near the front. She served in a number of states as state supervisor. Since 1936, she has conducted the Atchison County Public Health Service.

• Dr. and Mrs. Leslie Davis of Chicago, Illinois, are visiting here and in Rock Port with relatives. Dr. Davis, chemist, has spent the past several months at the University of Chicago in work on the atomic bomb. A graduate of Tarkio College and a former resident, he holds a Ph.D. degree. Following his visit, he will resume teaching duties in the University of Illinois medical center at Chicago.

• J.S. Miller of Miller and Stevenson Insurance Agency was presented with a gold plaque recognizing 50 years as agent with Hartford Insurance at a luncheon in his honor Wednesday at the Walnut Inn.

• Mr. and Mrs. William L. Beckman will celebrate their 50th anniversary at the United Methodist Church in Westboro Sunday, October 4. Mr. and Mrs. Beckman have lived all their married life in Westboro.

• Rev. David V. Plymire, an Assemblies of God missionary to Taiwan, Republic of China, will be guest speaker Tuesday, October 6, at the Tarkio Assembly of God Church.

• Honey Tree Nursery School and Tarkio United Methodist Church joined together in the purchase and installation of some new playground equipment on the lawn of the church.

• Darryl Lowrey, Service Technician for Sprint/United Telephone at Tarkio, recently celebrated 25 years of service with the company. He began work with the company as a lineman in Maryville and has held other positions with the company.

• Tarkio Development Corporation has contracted to build a house in Tarkio. Woodruff Arnold Home Center in Tarkio is the project supervisor with project subcontractors being from Atchison County.
