Hurricane Laura made landfall near Lake Charles, Louisiana, on August 27, 2020, causing mass destruction. After the storm dissipated, The National Fraternal Order of Police sent a request to all lodges across the country to assist the law enforcement officers and citizens in the immediate area.
Members of FOP Northwest Missouri Lodge #3 responded to the area August 31, 2020, to provide help.
The primary role of these volunteers was to provide meals for officers and residents in the immediate area. They supplied approximately 600 meals a day. After receiving a donation of items including disinfectant wipes and water, FOP members went out into the community and distributed them to citizens. They also worked with local law enforcement to remove debris and cut down trees when needed.
Upon his return, Chief Shannon Sherwood stated, “This was a humbling experience and I am glad I was able to respond and help those in need.” The City of Rock Port was honored to approve the request for assistance and appreciates the commitment of Police Chief Sherwood to this worthy endeavor. The city also commended the efforts of officers Morriss and Seiter and Deputy Houghton in covering for the chief during his absence.
