October 5, 1945
• More than $6,000 loss was the estimated damage resulting from fire that demolished a barn, implements, and popcorn plant equipment at the Commonwealth Farms, Inc., nine miles east of Tarkio. Fire broke out about nine o’clock Wednesday morning and in 20 minutes the barn had burned to the ground with nothing saved. Although a high pressure pump was used to fight the flames a high wind made the fire fighting useless. Fire did not spread to the popcorn crib near the barn.
• R.H. Glenn has sold his 200-acre home farm in the York neighborhood six and a half miles southeast of Tarkio to Frank Cooper. Last Friday, Mr. Cooper also purchased two lots on Main Street east of the Squire Ice Cream Co. from J.D. Rankin.
October 8, 1970
• In “Teller Tells” sponsored by First National Bank of Tarkio: “A universal delight is getting mail. Our morning mail is always interesting. Just for kicks we listed our Monday morning incoming mail by points of origin. We found that we had mail from 11 states, one being Alaska, and one foreign country, England. We receive deposits from a minister who lived in Tarkio over 12 years ago and a college student who opened his account as a student 10 years ago and still banks with us from an east coast city.”
• Competing in the Pickering Junior Rodeo October 3 and 4 were Jack and Joel Harbin and Rod Curren of Tarkio. Joel won first place trophy in the pony riding and Jack placed third in the first night’s competition of calf riding, but broke an arm in the pony riding and was unable to compete in the remainder of the rodeo. [There is no mention of what event Rod competed in or placed.]
• An open house will honor Mrs. Mary McEnaney for her 99th birthday Sunday, October 11, at the Westboro Town Hall.
October 5, 1995
• THS Homecoming King and Queen were crowned Friday night, September 29, at the end of the Indian victory over South Harrison of Bethany, Missouri. Travis Chambers and Angelica Erickson accepted the honors. The crownbearers were Trevor Sunderman and Megan Graves.
• The Atchison County Nutrition Center in Tarkio held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Day on September 26, 1995. Honored volunteers for the year were Janett Adams, Georgia Carter, and Wima Marrs who were presented with a silk corsage and a plaque with their name and year.
