October 19, 1945
• According to a letter written October 3rd to his parents, Norman Long, who is in the Navy, had the pleasure of meeting two Rock Port friends recently on Okinawa. They are Glen Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Miller of Rock Port, and Clyde Welch, who is Mrs. Miller’s brother. The three had a great get-together and talked about things at home. Long says the others were slated for Korea when he talked with them.
• Cecil Townsend and Edwin Hicks have purchased from Miss Tommy Jennings the Hiway Cafe and the service station which operates in conjunction with the restaurant.
• Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a barn and hay shed at one of John E. Rosenbohm’s farms southwest of Langdon Friday evening, together with a pick-up truck, seed wheat, 250 bales of straw, a set of harness, tools valued about $50 and other things.
October 22, 1970
• Featured this week is the new Rock Port elementary music teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Glaves. She received her Bachelor of Arts in music from San Francisco State College and her certification from Missouri Southern College in Joplin. This is her first year teaching and she says she likes Rock Port because the school is small and the parents take more interest in their children’s activities.
• The Big Lake Improvement Association honored Rep. Hardin Cox for his contributions to the lake area and the state over the past decade October 18 at Big Lake State Park.
• Rock Port’s City Council passed a resolution October 20 to curtail traffic around the Rock Port school for a six month trial period using a series of regulations. Traffic problems have been increasing daily at the school due to the construction projects going on and the increase in the number of students driving to and from school for lunch since the school cafeteria has not been completed.

• Place’s Discount Stores, Inc. is interested in opening a 19,000 square-foot facility next year in Tarkio. “We hope to start construction in the spring of 1996 for an autumn 1996 opening,” said company president Charles Place.
• The Atchison County Development Corporation is having an open house to introduce their new executive director, Carole Taylor, to the county and for everyone to visit the new office. The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, October 24.
