• Robert Graf and Ryland Coe have purchased two Fairchild army primary trainer planes which have been made into commercial models. They are being used by private individuals, particularly members of the Tarkio Flying Club. With these advanced training type planes, any aerobatic maneuvers are possible. As for speed, the planes are in the hundred mile class.

• Below freezing temperatures occurred this week in Tarkio with a low of 23 degrees being registered at the airways communication station at 6:28 Monday morning. High of the week was 85 degrees at 2:35 last Thursday afternoon.

• Seventy-six head of Poland China hogs were sold by Emil Tiemeyer last Friday for a total of $5,956. The top boar of the sale was sold to Eugene Dugan of Granville, Iowa, at $590.

October 29, 1970

• Roy A. Perry of Tarkio, foreman here for the Missouri State Highway Department, District 1, was one of a group of persons honored October 16 for 25 years of service with the highway department. An awards luncheon was held at Hotel Governor in Jefferson City.

• To celebrate Torrey Pines Drive-In’s grand opening in Tarkio, the restaurant is boasting about their broasted chicken, prepared in just seven minutes. Enjoy a half chicken dinner consisting of four mouth-watering pieces, coleslaw, French fried potatoes, and a roll for 97¢ Tuesday only, November 3. For the kick-off, the broaster company will be here with a chef.

• The Community Awareness Team (C.A.T.) in Tarkio is sponsoring a Kiss-A-Pig contest in conjunction with the Red Ribbon Week celebration! There are six contestants, including: Will Johnson, Tarkio Lions Club; Doug Summa, Tarkio Chamber of Commerce; Rob Dowis, Tarkio Academy; Ed Defenbaugh, Tarkio High School; Lesley Graves, Tarkio Elementary School; and Pastor Glenn Scott, Tarkio Rotary Club. A penny donated equals one vote. The lucky winner will get to “pucker up” during half-time of the Tarkio vs. Albany, Missouri, football game November 3.

• Chrissy Kerr and Elon Floyd recently received a surprise bonus from completing a writing assignment last year in Mrs. Ricks’ fifth grade class at Tarkio Elementary. The assignment was to write a letter and the two students chose to write to Gordon Snidow. Mr. Snidow sent his prints “The Queen of Hearts” to Chrissy and “The Last Star Mill” to Elon. Both prints have personalized autographs and thank you letters accompanied the prints.
